THEATRE - with the 're' that's how I have always spelt it and that's how it's spelt in Oz and UK:)

theatre- i think thats how it technically IS supposed to be spelled if you are referring to a live performance venue (and i thought you spell a cinema like "movie theatER")

I always thought theatre was the venue where the preformance is held and theater is the art form.

i just recently had this debate...i've always believed that no matter what, it was "THEATRE", and someone recently tried to tell me that "THEATRE" is actual live theatre, and THEATER refers to a movie house.

theatre makes it sound classy. And i think the context is different for different spellings.

Depends on my mood...if I'm feeling sophisticated, I'll use "theatre." Usually it's "theatre" anyway, though.

I like to use theater for an actual place like: tonight I'm going to the theater.
I use theatre for the more abstract term like: theatre is more intimate than cinema.
That way it's comparable to a theater like a movie theater and still makes sense when spelling 'theatrical.'

I use theatER when referring to theate in general terms, but TheatRE when referring to a specific theater i.e. the Majestic Theatre or St. James Theatre, etc.

My vote is with you WalveMalve. I think that it technically the correct way to use the different spellings, Theatre when referring to the genre and aspects of Theatre, and TheatER when referring to an actual place where it happens.

Well, here's how I do it:
Theater = the subject itself, as in "I love theater." Also used for the cinema--a movie THEATER.
Theatre = a theater for live performance, i.e. The Minskoff Theatre. Can also be used in regards to the subject of theater if you want to be slightly pretentious. For extra pretentiousness, spell it with a capital "T."

Well over here in England, there is only one spelling, 'theatre' and that is used for everything. 'Theater' is non-existant. According to our dictionary 'theater' is the US form.
