I don't buy YF being robbed. Without it's superstar cast, it falls flat on it's face. A Catered Affair is a different story. It has a lot of grace and I liked it. But I'm also one of he people who thought Cry Baby was quite fun when I saw it in San Diego. For me it's a close call.
Okay, I have to defend Young Frankenstein and say that SOOO many critics and Broadway know-it-alls went into that show WANTING it to fail. They judged it as bad before they even saw it, and we all know how stubborn us theatre people are about our opinions. But too many people can't leave their egos at the door and just enjoy a fun show, they have to bitch and moan about Mel Brooks and yet another movie-turned-musical going to Broadway. Just put the politics aside and have a good time. Everyone knows it wouldn't win best musical, but not getting nominated is a bit insulting. And whoever says that Christopher Fitzgerald was horrible must have been on crack when when they saw it, but everyone is allowed to their opinion.
What horrible things are people gonna say about Shrek before they see it?
"...but not getting nominated is a bit insulting."
I saw YF and had a lot of fun, and I liked it overall. I'm not one of those people who wanted it to fail; however I do not find the lack of nominations for this show insulting. Again, why do people find this insulting? I don't think YF got snubbed at all. It deserved a nomination for set design as well as featured actor and actress nominations for Christopher Fitzgerald and Andrea Martin, respectively. Did it really deserve that Best Musical nomination? Or even Best Book or Best Score? Didn't people say the score was forgettable and the book wasn't even that original (it was just basically a carbon copy of the movie)?
Besides, if Cry-Baby did not take that 4th spot, who's to say that YF would have? There is still A Catered Affair and Little Mermaid. And judging from what people have been saying here, it seems as if they would have liked to see Catered Affair take that 4th spot.

I saw YF and truly wished that I'd left at intermission.
I loved Sutton, Christopher and Andrea but that's all. I thought Megan Mullally was horribly misused and misdirected.
I think the right people in this show were nominated, however I think it's a real shame that Mary Testa, Jackie Hoffman and Cheyenne Jackson were not nominated. Thier presence in this show made a huge difference to the show itself and I think that's one of the points of the awards.
I still feel it was robbed of best score. Some of you are saying "didn't they say it wasn't that good." Well, who is they? The critics who wouldn't know a hair on their arm? Or the masses, who fill the theater every night with standing ovations.Well it's just my opinion that the score to Young Frankenstein is pure genius, MUCH better than his score for The Producers in every way. I feel bad for Mel, this score deserved the nom.

sutton foster didnt have that big of a role to get robbed. it wasnt like millie where it is obvious shes getting nominated. roger bart got robbed he was awesome.
A CATERED AFFAIR! Not only should it have been nominated, it should have WON the Tonys for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book! It is far and away the best piece of new musical theatre to have emerged this season. Fierstein's book is witty, moving and beautifully understated, while Bucchino's score is full of outstanding songs.

mntwister--I agree with you. I really enjoyed YF---enjoyed it the first time, but after I saw it for a second and third time---- I REALLY enjoyed the performances and music more and more. Roger Bart was very good----inflections, singing, movement. Yes, a large part of the enjoyment was the cast---but why then, no more nominations for the rest of the cast and also Strohman? I disagree with the person who disliked Megan's performance also. I loved the expresssions on her face, especially during "Deep Love". Her voice was perfect for that role. (IMO)
Probably the snub of Young Frankenstein was because Mel & company took all the awards for The Producers, in fact I am sure of it. But nothing is more unfair than the snub of this quality score.
With songs like Join the Family Business, Roll in the Hay, Listen to your Heart, Please Don't Touch Me, Together Again, He Vas My Boyfriend, the very dramatic "he's loose", Please Send Me Someone, Man about town, and ESPECIALLY Life Life Let My Creature live (operatic overtones), there is not one reason in the world this didn't deserve a nomination and a WIN. I am pissed and to be honest, I ain't watching this year because without this show I could care less. They are turning just as political just like the Oscars. So enjoy the awards all.
A month ago I made a prediction, because The Producers took the entire awards of its year, they would totally snub Young Frankenstein. And wa-lla. My respect for the Theater Wing and its members has now gone way down the bar.
I think YF deserved a lot more credit for its technical elements like Lighting, Costumes, and Sound. Also Susan Stroman had no reason to be snubbed for Choreography. However, I was very happy to see Fitzgerald get a nom because he carried the show. I was also glad to see Sutton Foster and Shuler Hensly snubbed because they were both good but not nomination material.
