re: Who Will Be Vera in Pal Joey?

Lauper, who will be fifty-five by the time this revival goes up, is far too old for Gladys.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

She doesn't look anywhere close to fifty five, though.
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

"Zip" remains, but there is no Melba in the Greenberg revision.
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

If there's no Melba, who sings "Zip!" and how does it fit into the show?

Gladys sings it and it becomes an onstage nightclub number.

Don't ya hate it when that happens, marshmallow?

Yeah, Marshmallow, the idea of Curtis as Joey has been one of my obsessions. I bring it up to him whenever I see him at the stagedoor and he says he'd love to be in a production. He's just not a big enough name at this point. One can always dream. I'm sure if he does it, PJ will be MY new obsession.

Kind of random suggestion, but I thought I'd throw it out there: what about Alice Ripley for Vera? When I suggested Ebersole, someone suggested someone who would bring a new vitality to it (quoting extremely vague and indirect). I think Alice would. It's definitely not the kind of role she usually plays, but I think she has the chops for it. Thoughts?

I just don't get why Hoff would be cast as Joey? I understand he is a Tony winner, but has he ever been on any show where had to do the kind of dancing required for the role?
I'm annoyed that Melba is not in the revised version of the show, I always loved the idea of an actress like Elaine Stritch stepping into the show for a 5-minute scene and walking out with it.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

Mr.Hoff was in the original cast of Tommy on Broadway.

After Gypsy's early closing, Patti might consider playing Vera. That is, if there are any theaters still standing after her rage.

A Director, do you get off on bashing LuPone? I'm not even a big fan of hers, and still don't get the need to bash her on every other thread.
She isn't the best choice for Vera, plus she has done it in the past and even got to record it.
And re Hoff, since when is TOMMY a dance show?

Believe it or not, Hoff is an AMAZING dancer. He has just never gotten to show off any of his talent in any shows (on Broadway)...

And Ray, Zip is still in the show.

Neddy, I meant to write Melba, not "Zip," thanks for correcting me.

I wouldn't want to see anyone except Hoff in the role. I am so excited to see him perform Joey.
[title of show] on Broadway. it's time. believe.

Haven't we established that Patti LuPone hatred is similar to Hilary Clinton hatred? Some people just LOVE it.
