Posted: 1/10/08 at 3:31pmI seen Les Miserables 4 times and piad full price once...during this past after Christmas week, just becuase so many shows sell out I didn't want to risk it. Other wise Broadway box twice (61.50 & 50 something), and student rushed it once as well.

Rush as often as I can, use GoldStar, enter contests, etc etc. Also, I've seen Les Miz over 50 times, but that's over the course of (now) 13 years, so spaced out it's not that bad.
Also, I have little interest in porn and video games.

Posted: 1/10/08 at 3:47pmI'm glad this came up because a conversation I overheard the other night at Spring Awakening blew my mind. During the intermission, the people who sat on stage walked to the orchestra and a friendly usher asked a girl if she knew how many times she had been at the show. The girl said yes, but wasn't forthcoming with an answer. When pressed she admitted to 120 times. I swear. (Another lady, overhearing the same, came up and admitted to having seen it 37 times). I've seen the "repeat viewer" there a few times myself, so it's not total lie (exaggerated, maybe?). I love the show but I can't even imagine that. And it's only been on Broadway for a little over a year. So she goes 10x a month? (Unless we're counting the off-Broadway run too, I have no idea). All I can say is WOW!
#53re: Who are those who see shows multiple times, and how??
Posted: 1/10/08 at 3:52pmI agree... wow! I am going for my fourth time this month to Spring Awakening and I feel like that's a lot for me. 4 takes the cake as the most time I have seen the same show.

I remember reading YEARS ago when Phantom opened on Broadway that a woman had seen it in London 200 times and had flown to New York for the opening and to see it as many times as she could fit into her trip
I don't know how long it had been running in the West End, but even I--who like to see shows I love multiple times--can't imagine seeing ANY show 200 times.

Hasn't anyone here watched "Gossip Girl" or seen "Cruel Intentions?" There is a subculture of rich kids in NYC who can afford to spend 100 dollars to see Wicked every weekend.
You should see the trust fund babies at Fred Segal in Los Angeles. Fifteen year olds with platinum or black Amex cards, buying five hundred dollar shoes and sweaters.
Must be nice.
BTW, does anyone besides me know about Doctor and Mrs. Sunshine? This is not thread jacking. I'd like to know if anyone knows their story?

as a teacher, I get the School Theater Discount Program slips mailed to me at school every few weeks. Lots of shows are featured on these coupons, and that's how I am able to take group after group of students to see shows all the time. (although they mainly asked for the same shows--RENT, Phantom, Spring Awakening, Ave Q, Color Purple)
There's also playbill.com Club, broadwaybox.com and of course the TKTS booths.
I teach at a catholic high school in a terrible neighborhood the NYC metro area, so I dont have ANY money, and that's one reason why I'd rather see my favorite shows over and over again for 50 bucks a pop rather than pay $111.00 to see Wicked once, you know what I mean? And who knows, maybe when Wicked starts getting discounted, it'll become one of my favorite shows : )

Posted: 1/10/08 at 4:49pmI won't ever try to tally up the money I've spent on HELLO, DOLLY! When I first saw the show, the orchestra seats were $9.90. I have the stubs to prove it. The last time I saw the show on Broadway, it was the closing performance and the seats cost $74.50 (matinee).
#58re: Who are those who see shows multiple times, and how??
Posted: 1/10/08 at 4:54pmJeez, Hello, Dolly! tickets went up really high really fast.

Her name's Joanne. She's a little obsessed. She'll be seeing the show for her 300th time on January 26 (I asked her last time I was there). She saw the Wedding Singer around 200 times, and did the same thing for Urinetown.

...did the Wedding Singer even HAVE 200 performances? Whatever.
I'd like to know where people like that get money for tickets. Granted, they're not paying $110 for orchestra seats, obviously, but christ...assuming that Joanne girl has seen the show on student rush or on-stage every time, she's blown nearly TEN GRAND seeing Spring Awakening alone. And the show just celebrated its first anniversary on Broadway! No wonder they broke even earlier last year. Jesus Christ.
Anyway, I only get to the city a few times a year, and whenever I see a show, I try to rush. Sometimes I decide to see something else last-minute, and if they're out of rush I'll usually spring for rear orchestra if they're in the 45 dollar range or less.
#61re: Who are those who see shows multiple times, and how??
Posted: 1/10/08 at 6:10pmShe sits onstage every night... Don't know how she gets those seats, but she must have connections.
#62re: Who are those who see shows multiple times, and how??
Posted: 1/10/08 at 6:55pmEvery time I saw her there, she has been onstage. Wow! That's complete dedication.

Well, the box office usually has 1 or a pair or a handfull of on-stage seats left over for student rush, at least they have every time I've been there.
Still...9000+ dollars...christ.

Posted: 1/10/08 at 7:26pm9,000 is the amount many people in New York pay their florists for a week. It's what they pay for limos per week. Or the booze tab. These people do breed. There are some seriously sad trust fund kids who have money to burn and no other life - although I suspect a devotion to the arts is better than anything the Hilton sisters ever do.

Damn, I thought I was over the top having seeing Phantom 15 times (and six times during the tour's run in D.C. this past summer), but in light of the SA girl, I think I'll just shut up.
I've heard of people seeing Phantom 300+ times; now the Wedding Singer person at 200 and 120 times to SA...the only thing my brain can manage is "Does not compute."
Must be nice though.

"IF I have to eat McDonald's and not sit in down in a restaurant so I can see Xanadu on stage or something, I think that's a fair trade :-P"
Ditto. Every time I go in the city by myself for a show, I try not to spend much on food and end up going to a Subway or McDonalds. If I'm with someone, we tend to go to a cheaper restaurant.
But, wow, I'd never see a show hundreds of times. I don't mind seeing shows multiple times, but at the same time, you should limit yourself. Who in their right mind would spend thousands of dollars seeing Spring Awakening 200 times is beyond me. Besides, I'd rather spend that extra money to see other shows that open up rather than see Spring Awakening for the 127th time.
The most I ever seen a show was 5 times: Haispray...4 times in Boston and once on Broadway.

In the closing show of THE BOY FROM OZ, Hugh Jackman acknowledged a fan of the show who had seen it approximately 200 times in its yearlong run. The audience gave her a rousing cheer! There were many fans who saw it multiple times and even went to Australia to see its arena version ( including myself
). So, it could be the show or the star of the show which could attract repeat patronage.

Posted: 1/10/08 at 7:44pmHow one can even see a show that many times and not get bored is beyond me. I still feel like falling asleep during Santa Fe in Rent, there's absolutely no way I could see it multiple days in a row...or weeks, for that matter.

To each his own
Can anyone watch the same DVD or listen to the same CD multiple times - probably
I have seen Les Miserables, one of my favourite shows, multiple times - Broadway, London, Paris, and even here in Manila. So, the show could have a slightly different feel every time ( definitely in Paris, as it was sung in French
).

Posted: 1/10/08 at 8:08pmI can completely understand seeing shows multiple times. I've seen Rent 9 times in various incarnations...Broadway, Tour, that high school that did it...Spring Awakening a handfull of times, Avenue Q...but 300 times at 31 bucks a pop? Come on.

A friend and I changed the quote about books to:
"Whenever I get a little extra money, I buy theatre tickets. If there's any left over I buy food."
Only honestly we do kind of split it between books and theatre tickets.
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!

Posted: 1/10/08 at 8:16pmThe only show I have seen more than once was Avenue Q... but I really have never had the desire to return to any other show.

As a college student who works on weekends, I don't have many other things to spend money on. Of course some money goes to putting gas in my car, but I try to see as many shows I can with the money that is left.
I've seen Xanadu 5 times now, and I know I'll see it a few more times. Sitting onstage saves a lot of money and for other shows, sitting in the Mezz or Balcony also lets me see the show, but for much less than an orchestra ticket. I use discount codes and student rush sometimes.
If I really want to see a show, I'll do what I have to... and if it happens to be the same show multiple times, then so be it!
