I agree about Madonna. I've always maintained she has good performances in her, but she needs a very strong director.
And Alan Parker's film is gorgeous but lacks focus and power. I wish he'd made her really tear into even one scene or song.

Eva Duarte de Peron was my favorite Evita.
My favorite Evita hands down is Elena Roger. I also think that Loni Ackerman and Valerie Perri were both fantastic.

And no love for Faye Dunaway?

Ironic that Dunaway presented LuPone with her Tony for EVITA and then she herself played the role in that (god-awful) television movie.

Madonna... On her acting, alone... I don't blame her for the soundtrack because it's overproduced across the board and she clearly was instructed to sing it so that the music would fit the very music video dubbing that was used in the film.
She might have a limited range, but her voice can be powerful.
I think one of the real reasons her Eva works so well, despite her acting, is the addition of the Another Suitcase sequence. We see her venerable... she has no idea that Migaldi is going to drop the bomb of having a wife and kids on her and all of a sudden we get a glimpse of Eva's transformation. We see her make the decision to use men because men have used her. It adds a lot to the character, who in the stage show is an opportunist from the beginning.

I saw Terri Klausner and she was quite strong vocally and dance wise BUT it was a very by the book performance. Whereas Patti personalized the role and acted it with quirkiness and a unique edge, Klausner did what was expected....hit the notes, did the steps etc. BUT it was very musical theatre and not really originaly acted.
I've read that Klausner had kind of a bad attitude since she felt overlooked. I don't know why but she thought she'd been hired more as an equal player and could never get past her resentment of Lupone getting all the attention.

Didn't Drein Altay get the replacement gig because she was sleeping with Hal Prince friend.... Paul Gemignani? That family definitly believes in nepotism....see Alexander's career!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I just shrieked in delight at the posting of that rare Valerie Perri "Rainbow High" vid!!
Thank you sooo much, MidWestGuy!! I love that lady!

My favorite "Evita" is a tie between Paloma San Basilio and Patti Lupone. Both performances have a raw quality, that makes them very interesting. There is something so powerful in both these Evas, that transcends one-dimension. They are both well-crafted performances, rich in specificity, humanity, and clear, larger-than-life points of view. These performances would be very rare today, in this era of political correctness, stylized performances, and so called "realism" over raw human emotion.

Julie Covington. She may not have the best voice, but she sings everything with such emotion, yet manages to be ice cold at the same time. The "white" album also has my favorite version of "Eva Beware of the City."
Never cared for Patti Lupone. She just seems to belt everything, without subtlety, and is often difficult to understand.

You're welcome, My Oh My! I kind of love that Perri looks and sounds like a brash Jean Seberg in that video. Her American accent is so pronounced.
