Thanks for the review, dramageek et al. I'm very excited to see the show on Sunday after having just seen Alice, Brian and Jenn's final performance last Sunday.
Damn!! I wanna go back and see this again so badly now!
So... uh... Anybody got any... you know... PM please?
Jason was a force of nature tonight, or at least I thought so. Really one of the best male performances I've seen in some time. I expected Marin Mazzie to be great, and she delivered. Go see them!
Saw it tonight!
Wonderful performance and choice of casting.
Marin Mazzie is a star. Her performance compared to Ripley's is very different. Kind of so different that I can't even compare them. Her 'I miss the Mountains' was BEAUTIFUL and it worked with her more classical voice. If you want full on belting they need to lower the keys but her use of head voice works in my opinion. Her version of Diana is beautiful.
Jason D. was great. I don't like saying that this person is mix of this and this but he REALLY is a mix of Brian D and Robert S. in my mind. His voice is beautiful and did not sound like a classical opera voice at all to me. I still think he needs to grow into this role more because somethings just didn't get to me. But nonetheless he was amazing.
Meghann Fahy is perfection. I can't even put my finger on it. Everything she did was amazing and her voice is so fresh. Jen's voice near the end of her run seemed a little strained so this was like a breath of fresh air. All her acting choices really made more sense to me also. I LOVE JEN but I could actually see Meghann play the lead in Spiderman over Jen.
Overall an amazing production. If you are a n2n fan you NEED to see this show with this new cast asap. It's a very different, fun, emotional experience!
Thanks for the review! I can't wait to see Meghann again, I agree with everything you said based on the two times I saw her. How is the chemistry between Meghann and Kyle Dean with their "parents"? And Louis and Marin?
Saw it tonight. I agree, the new cast members were great. Despite knowing what was coming because I've seen it before, it still left the same emotional impact for me. And this totally makes up for when I thought Marin Mazzie was boring in the role of the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot. This is the total opposite.
Just got back from the matinee. It started off a bit low-energy. The last performance I saw was Alice, Brian and Jen's last show last week when the first act really seemed like a comedy. Perhaps it was the matinee audience, but people weren't responding to jokes very well, nor were the cast playing it for laughs, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I'm still deciding on Marin. I'd read here about her using her head voice the whole time and if that's the case, she's developed a nice belt in the last week. She sounded great to me and it was nice to hear the notes sung on key. The only time I was vocally disappointed was when she comes back in with "You Don't Know" over Dan and Gabe doing "I Am the One". I still can't figure out how I liked her acting-wise. I think I'd gotten used to Alice going a little off the deep end and being totally neurotic in the show, so it was interesting to see it played so differently and a little more calmly.
Jason was fantastic. That voice! Adored him. I have seen it a number of times, twice with Bobby, twice with Brian and each time I think I won't be able to love the new Dan because I loved the old one so much. Once again, Jason proved me wrong. I thought he did a fantastic job and would return to see him, for sure. I saw him in Curtains a few years ago and in the Brigadoon concert gala for the Irish Rep earlier this summer and his voice is such a nice reminder of the beauty of a classically trained voice and how lacking that is on Broadway right now!
Meghann was also wonderful. She played the role with so much more subtlety than Jenn, which I really enjoyed. She didn't get nearly as many laughs as Jenn but also seemed more natural and much less conscious of her acting than Jenn ever did. Her voice was also stronger than I ever saw Jenn's- perhaps not more forceful, but with better tone. I really loved her and she was a beautiful person as well.
Adam, Kyle and Louis were same as ever, quite good! Adam's voice wasn't at its strongest tonight, but he has such great personality on the stage it didn't matter. I would say that he and Meghann don't quite have the same chemistry that he and Jenn did yet, but hopefully that'll come.
Wonderful show and looking forward to taking more friends in the future!
I saw yesterday's matinee and absolutely loved it. The audience was great, really responsive, laughing at anything and everything that had the least bit of humor. That help set the stage for a great show.
Marin was excellent. Like people have been saying, she plays a much more subdued Diana than Alice, but it definitely works. Someone said in another post that her choice to play a less manic/nuerotic Diana, put the emphasis more on the entire family rather than just her and I couldn't agree more. She brings a whole new magic to the show, she may not be Alice Ripley, but she is definitely doing Diana justice. From what people said initially, I think she is settling into the role vocally. She wasnt in head voice throughout the entire show as someone had mentioned. That being said, there are areas where she can work on, but nothing that made me wince. She shows a lot of emotion as she sings as well.
Meghann Fahy was absolutely brilliant. I was a little worried I wouldnt like her take on Natalie after people said she played the role more innocently, because I loved Jenn's more sardonic approach. But I loved Meghann just as much. She keeps the sassiness that makes me love Natalie so much, as well as showed a more gentle vulnerable side to her. I love her voice too, its so pure and strong.
Jason's voice was spectacular. Deep and Rich. His take on Dan was great too. He seemed to be very in love with Diana, but at the same time very fed up with their life. He showed Dan as being very conflicted between the two feelings, which I thought was very honest.
Kyle Dean Massey was just amazing, as usual. His Im Alive was absolutely electric.
Adam and Louis were great as well. In the beginning of the show Adam seemed a little subdued but he perked up just in time for Perfect for You.
Im glad the new cast turned out to be so wonderful. I hope they keep this show going strong.

I saw last night's show too. The new cast is great. For me, Marin Mazzie's singing was beautiful. She had a strong belt, and I loved how she did the role vocally. She did transition in and out of head and belt; however, it was done smoothly and sounded wonderful. Her acting is great too; however, I do think Alice was more believable as a mentally ill person. I'm sure as MM does the role more, she'll feel more comfortable in the part and this criticism will be moot.
I absolutely loved Jason, and his Act II was amazing! I prefer his take to RJS' because it was more complex and more emotional; however, the emotion was done in a careful buildup sort-of way. He sounded wonderful too. I loved him!
Meghann was fabulous and I liked her Natalie better than Jenn's. She just seemed more natural in the role, and her voice was very, very sweet.
I had never seen Aaron do the role (saw Tim Young instead), but I did like KDM. He was more angry and intense (moreso than Tim Young) which brought about an interesting perspective.
Overall, I really liked this cast and thought it was great. Different than the other time I saw the show but still as emotional and touching.
I don't remember there being an RJS who played Dan. I've only been aware of J. Robert Spencer, Brian d'Arcy James, and now Jason Daniely. Also, Kyle Dean's performance is very similar to Aaron Tveit's (which may or may not be due to the fact that Kyle Dean was a temporary replacement before he took over full-time).

I'm sure the poster meant JRS... although funny because his real name is Robert John Spencer!

Sorry yankee_fan907. I meant JRS. Was typing that email quickly with a little child tugging at my sleeve and nagging me to get off of the computer.
