In case anyone doesn't know, Meghann Fahy is doing double-duty on One Life to Live as psycho Hannah. (She even got to sing during their recent musical episode.) Doing a great job there.
As I walked past the new doors today, some girls were complaining about Marin's picture, that they couldn't believe that they had her crying in the pictures. They then went and took a picture in front of the doors.

Posted: 7/19/10 at 11:42pmI think there was just a mixup about the playbills. I'm hoping that when I see the show in the fall everyone will have fallen in place in their roles. I'm glad to hear Meghann did so well because I loved her the two times I saw her and I know she really deserves this.

Vanessa Ray did the same thing with As The World Turns while doing Hair.

Posted: 7/20/10 at 12:04amIt doesn't surprise me that she went between classical and belt the whole night. She has an absolutely beautiful voice. Personally, I thought she'd be vocally wrong for the role but I am all for giving everyone a shot aside from what the ruckus might be. I hope she learns how to vocally tackle this beast of a role. I wish her and the rest of the cast the best of luck as they dive into this monster of a show.

Posted: 7/20/10 at 1:37pmAdam, when do you think the critics will review the new cast? Is there a formal critic's performance, or does the critic just show up one night and then write their review?

The critics don't just 'show up' - most in fact have close relationships with the producers and within reason are very accomidating to coming when producers feel a show is ready to be re-reviewed.
Not every show is re-reviewed with replacement casts, by the way, and some reviewers will make an agreement with a producer to not actually publish a second review, if for whatever reason their opinion of the show (or the replacement cast) is less favorable than their initial impression.

To be honest, I do. Most of the people I know went on the recommendation of the show and its content, not because of Ripley. Maybe her delusional teenage fangirls will stop going, but they only bought lotto anyway. Of course its audience will lessen as time goes on, but I don't think that it will be for a little while, at least.

Exactly, Ripley was never really the draw. Sure she might have sold some tickets after she won the Tony. But people still lottoed and bought tickets when they were told Ripley would be out of the show (during vacations and absences).

Saw their first performance last night and was not disappointed.
Mazzie was very strong as Diana and her portrayal was completely different than Ripley's, which is just fine. I love new interpretations of great roles which is the main reason I got tickets for last night. I feel like Marin's "crazy" was a little softer than Alice's, if that makes any sense. Loved her 'I Miss the Mountains'. Loved both Ripley and Mazzie in the role.
Meghann Fahy was amazing as Natalie. I thought she was great and played Natalie a bit more subtly than Jen did when I saw the full original cast in November, and it worked great.
Jason seems like he has a good idea of where he's going with the role. Very interested to see how he develops
Kyle, Adam, and Louis gave their regular great performances!
Very excited to hear how this cast develops as time goes on.
*on a side note*
Saw Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt at the show. Great guys, very personable. Actually had seen them before the show through the window at Juniors and ran out to have them sign my napkin. Then then signed my actual playbill after the show. Really great night, a lot of excitement!

The Broadway Doctor does Next to Normal post-Ripley. ...mentions fans, and recasts.
What can Next to Normal do without Alice?

Posted: 7/20/10 at 11:37pmI have seen this show 3 times, twice with the OBC, and then once with Kyle, and Brian D'Arcy James. I'm very curious to hear Marin Mazzie specifically, I bet Jason will grow into the part and he has a magnificant voice but I want to be able to hear this performance. Does anyone happen to have or know of someone who has a recording or something of last nights performance or tonights?

I started reading that Broadway Doctor article, but the grammar was killing me.
I saw the show last night and think it will be fine without Alice.

Aw...you know: I thought I was DONE with N2N. I'd seen it OFF B'way, and 5 or 6 times ON. Was really happy to catch BDJ what I thought was my "last time".
Now, you people make the replacement cast seem so damn appealing.....damn you all!

Me too. Why do people insist on ending questions with a period.

Speaking of turning the show into a "brand," they have a fabulous new poster outside of the theater that I really like.
It has the logo in the background, and at the top it says, "Since 1918, only 8 musicals have won the Pulitzer Prize." It then lists, on a separate line, each of the first 7 musicals, starting with Of Thee I Sing. Underneath the line for Rent, it says, "And now...next to normal" with the title of the show in its larger, logo font.
Very effective piece of advertising.

Just got back from my trip to NY last night so didn't really get a chance to put all my thoughts about the first performance on the board yet. I was thoroughly pleased with the additions of Marin, Jason and Meghann.
Marin - I LOVED HER! I can't say I was too bothered by her head voice at all (as I believe someone mentioned it was used too often earlier in the thread) and I never really felt like she needed to be belting when she was using it. [side note - I had seen the matinee the day before (so I guess Alice, et al.'s 2nd to last show) and could not believe how horrible Alice's voice sounded compared to where it was a year ago when I last saw the show live. Kind of heartbreaking. I hope she gives herself some time to recover before jumping in to the role on tour.] In comparison with Alice, Marin's voice was a completely refreshing sound, clear and beautiful. It was great to hear the songs sung with a full voice. If anything, I think she might need to add a little grit (maybe brass it up a little?) at times so it doesn't sound so pretty. Her acting was wonderfully top-notch and she could not have looked better. "I Miss the Mountains" is one of those songs that never really does that much for me, but after hearing Marin sing it, I've grown much more fond of it. I don't know what it was, but she definitely brought something more to it for me. All in all, she blew me away. She definitely put her own spin on parts of the role, adding some comedic bits here and there and dramatic bits in other places. She is definitely a welcomed change for me.
Jason - He had a few rough patches during the first act but really pulled it together for act 2. While he is obviously talented and has a wonderful voice, it seemed a little bit too classical for me in act 1 but I became more comfortable with it as the show went on. He also had a bit of trouble with one or two lyrics I believe. In particular, I remember he sang "man for all ages" instead of "man for all seasons" during A Promise. I think there may have been a few other slips too but nothing that stood out as much to me. His acting was great though and he obviously has great chemistry with Marin. They look, sound, act great together. Biggest stand out scene for me was definitely the music box scene in act 2. Wow, just wow. Great performance. Any issues I had with him I think can probably just add up to first night nerves. I expect great reviews for him.
Meghann - I had heard great things about her and she lived up to expectation. I've only ever seen Jennifer in the role but Meghann gave it something a little extra I think. I loved Jennifer but I think Meghann just really got it a little more so for me. She played the role a little differently, though its kind of hard for me to put how so into words. Great job though and wonderfully sung. None of her scenes particularly stand out as I believe she was brilliant throughout the whole show.
All three were absolutely fantastic and I loved seeing the show again with them in it. The curtain call was particularly touching as Marin seemed to be either in tears or on the verge of tears the whole time. She blew kisses to each of the cast members and then shared a quick kiss with Jason as they walked off stage (which you can see in the playbill pictures). All three also came out to the stagedoor, signed playbills and took pictures. They were all very sweet and seemed so happy. I look forward to hearing how they progress in these roles! And I also encourage anyone considering seeing this cast in the show to see it. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed!
