Fan2, like it or not, the Tony's probably wouldn't be broadcasted unless they had the money for it, i.e. ratings. Ratings add in a HUGE part of what television channels will air because of the money that companies are willing to pay to advertise their products on said airtime. If a sitcom finale has hugely better ratings than some awards show, it will overrun. Now the Tony's have been so established for so long, it probably isn't likely, but that's how society works.
It's not that everyone wants a comedian as the host for the Tony's, but it's the main idea. You might've read the constant disappointments from the Tony's, and the host probably makes it all the worthwhile to watch. If we have some..dull..boring person up there, most thespians wouldn't even bother to tune in. Unless it was a dull, boring piece of eyecandy. Then they might reconsider. But a comedian is usually ideal because it captures the interest of the audience and keeps them entertained.
