A Hot commodity in the theater world is someone who you see in show after show after show. These actors define that:

Brian F. O'Byrne - Frozen, Doubt, Shining City, Coast of Utopia
Liev Schrieber - Glengarry Glen Ross, Macbeth, Talk Radio
Kelli O'Hara - Dracula, Piazza, Pajama Game
Sutton Foster - Millie, Little Women, Drowsy
Jill Clayburgh - Appian Way, Barefoot in the Park
Philip Bosco - 12 Angry Men, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Heartbreak House
Jessica Hecht - After the Fall, Julius Caesar, House in Town
Jenn Gambatese - Hairspray, Frog & Toad, All Shook Up, Tarzan
Michael Cerveris - Tommy, Titanic, Assassins, Sweeney

A lukewarm commodity is someone you see in shows more often than not, but they also do projects in Hollywood.

Tina Maddigan - Mammia Mia, Wedding Singer, that show on the Travel Channel
Swoozie Kurtz - Frozen, Imaginary Friends, Lost, Huff
Kate Burton - Water's Edge, Constant Wife, Gray's Anatomy
John Lithgow - DRS, Sweet Smell, Third Rock, 20 Good Years
Bebe Neuworth - Chicago, Frasier

A Cold actor is someone who hasn't been in a show on or off Broadway in a number of years:
Faith Prince - Bells are Ringing, Guys and Dolls
Megan Mullally - How to Succeed in Business
Marin Mazzie - Kiss Me Kate, Man of La Mancha
Brian Stokes Mitchell - Kiss Me Kate, Man of La Mancha

Note: Cold doesn't detract from talent or projects, they just haven't been on stage in a while.

Yeeeeeah. That one role has forever solidified her as a serious actress. But then, you're true goal of the post wasn't to be informative or insightful, was it? It was to somehow attempt to discredit my opinion. Tell me...don't you ever tire of that sanctimonious, bitchy routine? Because, frankly, it's become rather predictable.

I'm intrigued about Betty Buckley. She obviously has a strong voice and a commanding presence. It's been about 10 years or so since she was last on Broadway with Sunset Boulevard. Is it because the powers-that-be just don't offer her roles she can handle? Or, is it that she has a reputation (whether deserved or undeserved) for being extremely difficult and demanding? I'm just thinking out loud. from Roman in Austin,Texas... the official Patti LuPone FANatic

I agree with the people who said that Sweeney may be the peak of Cerveris' career. He's very talented and I have little doubt that he'll go on to do more wonderful things, but his work in Sweeney seems fairly unbeatable, especially when you're talking about one actor outdoing himself.

I think Raúl's career belongs on the hot list. He's achieved a hell of a lot so far, and he's only 35. I think -- possibly with the exception of Chitty -- that he's constantly outdoing himself, and doing one better than the next with each project he takes on. That man works his ass off, and I think his resume shows it. He's got versatility to make him a casting director's dream. He's almost always working, rarely gets a bad review, and even though many of his projects have been financial flops, he's been able to rise above that and be very successful, especially considering that in the grand scheme, he hasn't even been working in New York for all that long. I certainly think that thusfar, Company is going to be the high point, and he's absolutely still on the rise, but rather than "heating up" I'd consider him already hot. And getting hotter.

Well hun, you pretty much discredit yourself with a lack of basic grammar and spelling use. But, lack of education aside -- if we're talking theater, which we are, I'd say your assertion that Kim Cattrall will forever be typecast after her role on Sex and the City is pretty much discredited by your lack of knowledge of the *post-Sex and the City career* to which you so confidently refer. It sounds to me like you were speaking about Ms. Cattrall's future career in television and movies, NOT theater, as it seems you had no clue that any theater credits existed on her resume. As with most of your posts on here, such misguided arguments are more suited to a Hollywood message board than a Broadway board.

"Well hun, you pretty much discredit yourself with a lack of basic grammar and spelling use."

And you discredited that very sentence by using the word "hun" (which is an ancient warrior) instead of what you were going for - the (sarcastic, I assume) abbreviation for "honey."

As for the Cattrall statement, are we not all aware that she has been playing that same character her entire career? Or is that just those of you who never heard of her before Sex and the City?

Ummm..what's your damage, Heather?

We were talking about Broadway careers and credits. Which Catrall doesn't have. Out of that whole post, THAT'S the ONLY point you're hinging your "you don't know theater" argument on? That's pathetic. You took the Catrall comment out of context and used that as your "proof" that I know nothing about theater because it allowed you to, as usual, be nothing more than a bitchy drama queen. How was my grammar on that one, you selfimportant unhappy gasbag?

You don't like me. Gotcha loud and clear. But at least pose an argument that is substantial and not based on personal feelings. Or can you not do that?

Well, Betty Buckley did Triumph of Love on Broadway in like 1998 and she also did a straight play Off Broadway, Nicky Silver's The Eros Trilogy at Vineyard Theatre in 1999.

Her website notes:

"On television, she has most recently finished the film Vinegar Hill for CBS to be aired in 2005. For three seasons she played the role of Suzanne Fitzgerald in the HBO Cable series Oz."

And it mentions her 2002 Grammy nom for her album on Concord Records, Stars and the Moon, Betty Buckley Live at the Donmar. So she's been busy but yes, cold as far as not appearing on Broadway.

Patrick Wilson is doing "Little Children" with Kate Winslet. It's coming out this fall and it's going to be a great film. They say it has Oscar potential. I can't wait for it.

Kristin Chenoweth's Broadway career is definately turning cold. I am a huge fan of her work (Stage, film, and recordings), but I highly doubt she will be making a return to the stage any time soon. Maybe a concert here and there, or an Encores run like The Apple Tree, but a year long run in a show looks rather grim for her in the near future. I think she is really just trying to expose herself to the world rather than stay true to her theatre roots. I feel once Kristin becomes a semi-Household name she will return to Broadway, which might not be for a few years.

HOT (TALENT, LOOKS AND GOOD RESUMES)

John Lloyd Young

He's been in one Broadway show. Yes, he won a Tony for it, but I don't think any employer in any field would consider that a "good resume". How does his one show make him "hot" and someone like Raúl Esparza and his many critically-acclaimed roles make him "on the verge of hotness"? Or Michael Cerveris, who's done nearly every leading Sondheim role known to man and won a Tony, could be considered "lukewarm"? I don't see how JLY getting lucky on his Broadway debut makes him that much "hotter" than actors that have done consistantly celebrated work in recent years. I'm not saying he's not good in Jersey Boys, but "good resume" doesn't seem accurate in his case. Let's see his follow-up to Jersey Boys before lauding his career.

While we're at it, if Kristin and Idina are "evergreen", Audra definitely deserves a place on that list too.

"John Lloyd Young

He also won multiple awards for it, got almost unanimous glowing reviews, got a television deal and was in one of the most financially successful shows of the year. One "great" show? Maybe. But he got a lot of bang for his buck with that one show. More than many young actors have that I can recall. Except for Chenoweth. I don't think Cerveris even came close to that after Tommy.

"While we're at it, if Kristin and Idina are "evergreen", Audra definitely deserves a place on that list too. "

Agreed.

Cerveris Broadway roles have been in poorly reviewed shows, with the exception of Tommy. Hot, to me, means who has a mass appeal and who can fill the seats. I don't think Cerveris qualifies. And I say that as someone who loves his work.

"Moxie with all that name calling this might as well be 2nd grade.Who uses the word hun anymore? "

Umm...Foster did. Read the thread. So, maybe direct that snot-filled comment at him, hmmm? As for acting like we're in 2nd grade...do those petty PM's you sent me a couple weeks ago also count? Or, because those weren't on the boards, they don't qualify? I can be as petty and gossipy as the next person on here, but so can you. So get off your soapboxand take that bony finger of judgement and point it at yourself.

Wait, Asassins and Sweeney were both very well reviewed.

Interesting, considering the same statement could almost have applied to Norbert Leo Butz last season and yet, no one has mentioned him so far in this thread as being "hot". Like I said, wait until his next role- or even next season- before making claims like this, because success is fleeting.

Cold: Kerry Butler. Won raves in HAIRSPRAY (much outrage when she was not nominated for a Tony), but her follow-up in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS was a dissapointment, and Disney's LITTLE MERMAID seems to have evaporated.

Is she still part of THE OPPOSITE OF SEX?

yes, i think she is

under "becoming hotter", i'd say Felicia Finley. AIDA, SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE, and now WEDDING SINGER, i think that she is an actress who is showing up in some shows every so often, and is very talented

hope that came out right, and if it didnt, please no accusations...

basically, Felicia is becoming "hotter"

as is Kelli O'Hara most definitely!

I think that's because the original post of this thread specifically asked who was hot on Broadway "right now." Some took that to mean "this season" and some took that to mean "in general."

Carolee Carmello's career is hot. She was phenominal in Chess and still has one of the most powerful voices, and that was eighteen years ago. Her performances in Parade, Mamma Mia, The Scarlet Pimpernel and even Lestat were all astounding, and she has proven that even when not CREATING a role, she makes it her own.

Her career is not hot in the way that she is casted in every successful show, but in the fact that she takes on challenging roles and prevails. She is a risk taker. And, at forty something, she is pretty hot.

She has also been attached to many new works, such as the Royal Family of Broadway.
