Why'd Betty Buckley leave NY?

She doesn't even live there anymore. Do you think that hurt her career? I'd love to see her in a show someday. Do you think that will ever happen?

Her mom, other family members, and friends all live in Texas. She has a beautiful ranch with horses. She works constantly in concerts, teaching master classes, and starred in The Old Friends off-Broadway recently and did Dear World in London in the past couple years. She released her newest album, Ghostlight, a couple months ago to critical acclaim. She's very much still part of the scene. I wouldn't be surprised if she ended up on Broadway again soon.

Betty Buckley has always been a Texas girl, and has never stopped performing. She appears regularly on stage and in concert in NYC and throughout the country. Last year she received a Drama Desk Award nomination for her Off-Broadway performance in Horton Foote's The Old Friends (reprised at Houston's Alley Theater), and appeared on the current season of HBO's Getting On. Her latest CD, Ghostlight, was released last October.

Cuz she loves living in Texas on a ranch with her horses, friends, mom ...
She still is very active in her career on stage in NY, London, in concerts and teaching. She makes it work not having to live in NYC.

And of course, what isn't mentioned here: money. People often have some bizarre idea that merely remaining in show business means a New York centric life is a given. And doable. I'm always amused when people say "why did so-and-so stay in that show so long?" as if a paycheck isn't a remote possibility. Anyone who's lived in Manhattan (or frankly the other boros) particularly in the past 20 years, can tell you what it costs just to pay your bills. Unless you have a salaried job, it can be one of the most expensive places on the planet. Never a bulletin, but never truer. I'm not suggesting Ms. Buckley is cash poor; I'm sure she's not. I am saying, at a certain point, everyone who's sustained a New York based career faces decisions about living there. Even names.

Betty left NY to have the space to live the life she left years earlier. She wanted to own and ride her horses.
Betty has balanced her career beautifully since moving from NY, releasing multiple CDs, performing in many plays, and doing concert tours around the country, and singing in month-long engagements here in NYC. She still teaches regularly as well. From her base in Texas she flies to both coasts easily to do stage and TV. BY NO MEANS has she left her career....she has only left New York. From the photos she posts of her ranch and her beautiful animals, it seems that she has found a place that grounds her and fills her heart, and makes it easier to deal with the rest that show business has to offer. I daresay she's more present now than when she lived here.

Have you seen the cost of housing in NY? If poor Dianne Wiest can't pay her rent, how's Betty Buckley supposed to get by?

Once you've firmly established yourself in New York (as a stage actor) or L.A. (as a film actor), you don't really have to live there anymore. You can just fly in for auditions when they call you. And people send video auditions a lot even for theater now...Lots of movie stars don't live in L.A. (or even the U.S.), so I'm sure it can be the same for Broadway stars. If someone wants her for their play, they know where to find her.

just to let you know Betty comes back to NYC every year for the 11 years that she has loved back in Texas extended engagements in the City & She tours widely in concert & has continued to work in film & television. It seems she is much busier now than ever with all the concert /tv work..as someone said success means you have choices.
