Why didn't Wicked get nominated for Best New Musical in 2007 Oliviers

I was looking at the nominees, which were Avenue Q, Caroline or Change, Spamalot, and Porgy and Bess, and Wicked should have been there. Porgy and Bess was first performed in 1935. Not exacty a new musical. I wonder if South Pacific will get nominated for Best Musical in the Tony's this year. Of course, they won't. "Wicked", the book and music and lyrics, are superior to Spamalot, and it should have been nominated, along with a few other nominees. But, what can we do about that now. Also, how did "Phantom" win over "Les Mis" in 1986. The voting committee must have been heavily drugged that day. Updated On: 4/17/08 at 06:19 PM

'Porgy & Bess' was newly musicalised. Was it Trevor Nunn who hacked it about? Turned it from a four hour+ opera into a two and a half hour musical. It was sufficiently altered that it may as well have been a new musical. So they chose to include it as such.

You personally may consider 'Wicked' superior to 'Spamalot'. Many people don't. Also, please not to be forgetting that this is the country that spawned Monty Python in the first place. You may have noticed that when it comes to awards ceremonies, people do tend to favour the more native options.

What we can do is acknowledge the reality that there were other more worthy candidates than 'Wicked' that year, in EVERY category, and stop whinging. :3

Also, 'Phantom Of The Opera' was probably entertaining in 1986. Lord knows it isn't now, but it obviously got its unstoppable momentum from somewhere. :P

You're absolutley right. South Pacific will not get nominated for Best Musical at this year's Tonys because it isn't a new musical. It's a new mounting of the show, but not a brand new musical. It will instead be nominated in the category of Best Revival.

The reason Wicked wasn't nominated for the Oliviers was because all 5 nominees were better shows. Like Weez said, Britain is the home of Monty Python, so there's no way they would not nominate Spamalot. Caroline, or Change (which should have won BM at the Tonys IMO), Porgy and Bess, and Avenue Q are simply superior when matched against Wicked. I'm not Wicked bashing, but it's the truth.

No, there was no Idina in TLM, no we don't know how you can make a Wicked video with youtube footage, Wicked wasn't nominated for obvious reasons and there are other musicals that are not WICKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED.

Having seen all of those nominated productions (including Wicked), they simply nominated the best musicals of that season. Aside from Porgy and Bess, the other shows were all also nominated for Tonys, so America also seemed to think pretty highly of them. And, as has been previously stated, Porgy and Bess was a new musical adaptation of the opera.

My explanation for the threads:
Olivier (This one): I was looking at the 2007 nominees for Best New Musical and saw Wicked wasn't on there, wanted to know why
TLM-Thought that there was a character in TLM called Idina
iMovie-Wanted to make one

I know that there are other musicals besides "Wicked". "Wicked" isn't even my number one-favorite musical. I'm DEFINITELY not a fangirl.

it didn't. they weren't nominated in the same year. Les Mis was nominated for the 1985 Olivier Awards (and lost to Me and My Girl), while Phantom won in 1986.

Spamalot is just plain awesome. I can't get enough of the music at all, and a lot of songs are in my top 25 most listened on my iPod. There are only 2 songs from Wicked on that, and they are near the bottom. But I still love the music. And you cannot hate Porgy and Bess because Gershwin wrote the music. To me, he is a musical genius.

Oh, and spellingbeefan-That picture making fun of Wicked just made me laugh so hard. My sister sitting next to me probably thinks I'm insane for sitting here laughing so much about something sort of dumb.
