That is interesting, I did not know that bit about tipping dressers.
I was just going to post the same thing. Is it common courtesy to tip your dresser?
It's news to me too...
I must have seen her earlier in the run, because she was rock'n'rollin and had that bitchin' guitar solo. The chorus members were the ones who lacked energy to me, but it was full of nice treats - c'mon Alice Ripley's breasts, Sebastian LaCause's body, Raul Esparza singing those last notes like no other. Fun times.
I so wish I could have seen Rocky Horror with Joan in it. Even though I'm young for it, I've always LOVED Joan Jett and the Blackhearts! I bet she was awesome at the runs beginning (or for pretty much all of it!)
Oh, if only I were a Transexual, Transylvanian and were able to do a Time Warp and see the Broadway Revival and the original London, LA and Bway productions.
Here is what Joan's producer has to say on the matter. I think it explains it very well:

I hate Kristen Lee Kelly on the recording. She sounds like a man. And I'm not sure if they did this for Joan as well, but in "Time Warp" when Kristen sings on the recording the part is taken down A LOT. (Which is probably contributing to her sounding like a man)

I would guess it was taken down for Jett.
I'm kinda warming up to the revival version, but to me Columbia IS Nell Campbell (or Boni Enten); perky, high voiced dancer.
For anyone who saw Ana Gasteyer, did she sing in the same range as Jett and Kelly? I'm sure she could've performed the role in either range.
I COMPLETELY agree Mr Sweet! I feel like her and Magenta should almost be polar opposites. And in the revival I just felt that there was too much similarity AND that Columbia became a completely different character than the original film.
I love Daphne Rubin-Vega in the cast recording but the other Usherette (is it Kristen Lee Kelly?) sounds almost just like her.
Agreed. They blend into the same character, especially on the recording. The recent production I was in also went for a very hard-core rocker Columbia, which is very disappointing to me. So no perky voice or tap solo
Actually the first time I heard Science Fiction I thought Daphne was singing it the whole way through, but Kristen sings the second verse, which I didn't realize until Daphne came back in on "give you some terrible thrills." Though I think they sound great when singing together in the last chorus. It seems the second Usherette is given more of the song in each major production, Patricia Quinn's Betty Boop-ish Usherette (The Strawberry Time Girl) sang the entire number, I don't think Nell even played the second girl; and in the Roxy recording, Jaime Donnely's Usherette, Trixie, sang most of the song with Boni Enten dueting on the last few lines of the second verse.
I mean, superkudos to the team for not trying to recreate the film, which everyone was against...I just don't know about Columbia, it seems like they tried too hard to make her different.
edit:
I also cannot stand all the lines they gave to the ensemble, they get really annoying fast.
OMG I never realized Kristen sang the whole second verse hahaha! I always wondered why two people are singing by the end of the song. And concerning the ensemble (or "Phantoms"), I enjoy the majority of what's been added in for them. But it gets a little extreme at a certain point.
Daphne's voice has a very unique sound to it, and as a fan of hers I sort of was able to tell it wasn't her singing the second verse in "Science Fiction" but I even questioned myself for a bit. I'm not a fan of the ROCKY HORROR score really, except for the opening number and "Toucha Toucha Touch Me" so I'm not sure how Kelly sounds in the other tracks.
I did see a college production in November that had the tap solo for Columbia, also the actress playing Magenta sang all of "Science Fiction."

Mind if I ask which song you consider to be the title song? Last I checked there was no song in the score called "The Rocky Horror Show" or any variation thereof.
"Science Fiction" is probably what ray means by the title song. But that's just my best guess.
Oops, I meant to say the opening number, let me edit. Thanks for the correction, hehe.
I appreciated the score a lot more via the revival recording.
I first heard the show via the revival recording, and in comparison I like it better than the movie. I like that it has more of a rock edge, esp. on the Time Warp.
The revival recording is pretty much the only one I listen to now. The new orchestrations are awesome. Only on occasion will I listen to the other recording I have, but only because it has all the dialogue so I guess when I'm in the mood to listen to the entire show I'll listen to that one, but otherwise I can't really stand the old orchestrations.
