Wicked 2/19 8:00: Sho's Show

This was my fifth time seeing Wicked, first seeing Shoshana live.

This was my favorite out of all five times, Shoshana is the best Elphaba I've seen-- better than Idina and Eden.. COMBINED. She owned the role and her transition into turning Wicked was incredible. AND HER VOICE! I have never heard Defying Gravity or No Good Deed sung that well..

Everyone else was wonderful, give or take David Ayers and Jeffrey Kuhn who were serviceable.

Too tired to write a thoughtful review, just wanted everyone to know what a star Shoshana is.

This may sound amateur, but having seen over 75 Broadway shows, I'd go as far to say the performance she gave last night was the best female performance Ive ever seen on a Broadway stage. This woman has an incredible future ahead of her! Updated On: 2/20/05 at 05:07 PM

I pretty much vowed that I'd never go to "Wicked" again, but since Shoshana has gotten raves across the board, I may have to.

Shoshana sounds great. It's a real shame they don't have a Tony for replacements.

JLT would win it, if they did. She will have been with the show MUCH longer than Sho by Tony time.

Have they announced a replacement for Carole Shelley yet? I have a reason to suspect it'll be someone really good.


Usually it takes a month or two for the actors to really get comfortable in their roles. I'm sure David and Jeffery will warm up as time goes on. I hope...

If the Tonys really will do a Replacement Categorie.

I SERIOUSLY doubt they would give it to Shoshana. It would be a complete slap in the face to Idina, I just can't see them doing it. Now JLT she would have a chance. The woman deserves a Tony, for many years now she has. She is incredible on stage, especially as Glinda. She would really deserve the award, much more than Sho.

How would it be a slap in Idina's face? Idina left, Sho took over. It's not like you can win a Tony twice for the same role.

Would you really want to see the same character (though different actress) win two years in a row? Even if it's a different category. I don't think thats cool. JLT deserves it.

I doubt they will create a replacement category, so I don't even think about it.

there was a lot of news that they really wanted to create a replacement category for this year. But we haven't heard any news on it for a while.

You cant look at the possibility of that category as a slap in the face to the originators of the roles... but to consider it in this way, if anything, itd be more of an insult for those who DIDNT win as the originator of a role. With an example like idina/shoshana it would be saying the replacement was just as good as the original but was different enough to merit recognition of their own.

If they gave a Tony for Best Replacement to JLT, it would be giving an award to a replacement who couldn't touch the original.

If they gave the Tony to Shoshana, they would be giving it to an actress who far outshined the original.. IMHO..

Benzy-I'll go, since you're recommendation is so high. And, as good as JLT is, Kristin owns the role.

I never saw Kristin. But they say JLT is just as good, if not better.

I have plenty of Kristin sound clips. JLT plays the role with much more heart, and she is more dramatic...and it works.

While I have yet to see Shoshana in the role (I doubt I will - money wise) I have heard her sing some things from the show and I said I wasn't to impressed. Well I just wanted to say I heard more and well, wow. She sounds terrific. I just wanted to rescind my previous comments, and thought this was the perfect place to do it. :)

wow, to say she was the best female performance you've ever seen. wow. that's impressive. i would love someone huge to take over for carole shelley. it would make my day, she doesn't even need to really sing. but lansbury would be hilarious!

benzy, i think the exact opposite of you:
if jlt got a replacement tony it would be saying, you deserve it, cheno didn't. you are better than her.
if sho got a replacement tony it would be saying, alright, idina got one and you're just as good, you deserve one too!

however. it has already been said that there is absolutely no way there will be a replacement category this year. the categories are decided the day after the tony broadcast. so this june 6th they will decide the 2005-2006 categories. that's the earliest a replacement category could come into play.
