I remember someone asking Sho on her fansite what she thought of a "best replacement" award and she didn't like that idea. Something along the lines of it was un-nessessary(don't kill me for the spelling).
Glad you liked Shoshana, she's awesome!

I saw Sho in the part back on the 10th of February, as well as Idina 3 other times, and Eden once. While I really enjoyed Sho's performance, something was missing for me. Her voice is absolutely the most incredible singing Elphaba by far--she just makes it look so easy! She never seems to be straining, or screaming, she honestly sings those notes! For me she seemed a bit too jolly, and friendly. I loved the sarcasm and cynical nature of Idina's Elphaba, and that was missing here with Sho.
I feel like overall, she never transforms into the Wicked Witch, she always stays the immature Elphaba, without any real anger towards the situations that she has been put through. She just isn't witchy enough.
Its a different take, and for me I liked Idina's acting a bit better. For me, If I could put Sho's voice with Idina's acting and line delivery--that would be the ideal Elphaba in my mind. Just my thoughts!

Shoshanna was amazing.
I'm not a fan of the show, but I loved her.
She brought a subtle tenderness to the role that I loved and her singing was far better than Idina's was.
Idina was more intense, but Shoshanna was much better.
Ayers was awful. I really liked him in Fiddler, but his voice cracked all over the place in Wicked and his acting was passable at best.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Posted: 2/20/05 at 8:14pmim glad you liked her! i saw her on 1/8 (the performance right after the idina disaster) and now im a huge fan..going again in TEN DAYS!! i cant wait...and as far as best replacement, i think shoshana would deserve it more than JLT, since i dont think JLT is as good as kristin and SHE didnt even win a tony. but thats just my opinion.

ljay,
Two things. The Replacement category discussion was never going to be for this year. They were discussing it for the 2005-6 season.
Also, if you've only "heard" Kristin's clips, you can't make the JLT comparison. A HUGE part of Kristin's performance, despite her amazing voice, was her facial expressions. While I really like JLT's performance, it's very different, and she doesn't go to the same depth in the same way.
And I think Angela would be a great Morrible. Bring it on.

AND A WASTE OF TALENT
Of course, carole is ALSO wasting away her talent, too...

Posted: 2/20/05 at 10:11pmSweet Lord! I would sell my mother to be able to see Lansbury on stage. It'll never happen though. She's "retired."

Gasilent- Sorry, I didn't know they wanted to create the award for next year. My bad.
I know your a big Kristin fan. I love her too. But still there are many people who liked JLT more, and some who liked JLT just as much. I don't think it takes rocket science to say JLT plays the role my dramatic.
I love them both. I really WISH I saw Kristin though. The frickin' cancellation line, if only it worked in my favor.

No, I get what you mean, re: JLT. I think she's great.
PJ, have you informed your mother that you'd sell her to see Angela on stage?

I haven't seen "Wicked" with the new cast yet. I keep reading that Shoshana plays Elphaba more "jolly" and "clumsy." I'm not sure I like this. I mean, the original book makes Elphaba very sarcastic, with a biting wit and such. That's how Idina played it, so I assumed they were going with that image the writer of the novel had for her. I hope they give Shoshana the book and have her bring it in a little...

Elphaba from the book Wicked and Elphaba from the Musical are two differnt characters. (one may be based upon the other, but as they are written by differnet people with variations in storyline they are different.) It is up to the individual actor to portray the role in a way that is natural and meaningful to them.
