Say what you will about Wicked, but this is a tremendous accomplishment for the entire Broadway community. It generates interest for the industry as a whole. Besides, the average ticket price was only up $11.83 over the previous week. If you want to accuse any show of gouging, look at Spelling Bee. Their AVERAGE ticket price was $6.12 OVER their top ticket price and $22.25 over the previous week. What's THAT all about?
Spamalot is gouging. Spelling Bee's ticket price average is high because it is a much smaller theatre...and they still have a ticket lottery, when they can easily get rid of it (but it's popular, even without the Wicked rejects).
Fosse -- small theatre still doesn't answer why the average was higher than the highest ticket price. Highest ticket is $95.00. Their average was $101.12. Spamalot was just $5 more on average per ticket and they have a top ticket price over $300.
CONGRATULATION! I'm very happy for this big succes! A good new and hope for the musical theater: a completely new, modern and original musical, without big stars (as Appelgate, Lane or Banderas for other shows) in the cast, without the nostalgia factor for golden ages (as Millie, Hairspray...) non based upon a very popular blockbuster movie... Wicked is a triumph! Yes there's a good Maguire novel (but not so popular as "Harry Potter"), there's The Wizard Of Oz...but I think that people loves this show for other reasons... People go for the show, finally! I hope that this wonderful musical will come soon also in Europe!
