Is anyone else slightly let down in the changes to G(a)linda's costumes for the touring production of Wicked? It appears that Susan Hilferty has added quite a bit of "poof" to the design and it is not very flattering, in my opinion? Any differing opinions? For one, the Shiz dress Glinda wears now is not flattering and is missing the great cut that is present in the broadway design. Any other things anyone noticed?

It bugs me too. Way too poofy for me. Also JLT's Popular dress isnt poofy enough for me either like compared to Cheno's.
It looks to me like the costumes in general are not nearly in as nice of quality as the NY production. It bugs me as well.

Wait what are we bugged about? Are they too poofy or not poofy enough? I might have to wait till I see the show to get bugged!
I do hate when the poofiness changes, though!

That sucks..The costumes should be identical to what is on Broadway.
If you look at the first picture that was released (the bad angle one), her Glinda dress is also a lot more poofy.
I don't like the poofiness.
That new dress really is horrible. I would never want to wear that.
I do enjoy the beret, however.
I dont think the costumes shoudl be identical. each actor has a differnt build and body shape, so waht looks good on other people might look bad on another. Also every little bit of poof costs money. On the road there is not always time/the means to fix if if something goes wrong.
sometimes the cost outweighs the benefiets.
This kinda bothers me. Saw the show last April and was looking forward to the tour. 20 of us are going in Denver. There are already set changes (The hat in the beginning and the staircases), now the costumes. I will go because I have friends that I wanted to see it with. Plus I have already reserved a block of seats.
ummmmmmm WHO CARES?
Christ get a life.
I hear Carol Kane is wearing a different adult diaper than Carole Shelley.
Well I care...I would like to see the same show I paid to see in New York and am paying top dollar to see in Denver! I understand some changes needed to be made but when you have all of these promo shots flying around of the original cast in the original costumes, you expect to see them when you go to see the show.
Tours are almost always different than the Broadway version. I am sure some of the sets of this Wicked are slightly scaled down, as I am sure not all the spaces are the same as the Gershwin stage and to travel with all of that set, is difficult, so...whether it is a small change or a big one-a tour of a Broadway show will always have something different about the physical production.
she looks liek a horrible rip off of dainty june..... she also looks REALLY chunky and oddly shapped

Bobby is right. It's just not feasible to bring a show like Wicked on the road without scaling down a bit. As for the dress, its only one scene, so its not that big of an issue
other changes(culled from the pictures available)- glinda's dress is no longer beaded, its metallic fabric with sequins, the straight wig is gone (look in the pic at the top of this thread). Morrible's dresses seem alot baggier. and fiyero's pants are now tan, as opposed to white

Dude, I care. I have an MFA in costume design. I think it's funny you took the time to ask. Someone who has a name like Carl Magnus and a sort of fanatic Johnny Depp shot for an icon..people care about things, man. Did you really need to ask? These boards can get really funny to me, but man, that's a ridiculous question.
I think I'm gonna miss those white pants!
Don't all tours do minor changes to costume, set, ect.? I remember the TMM tour had slightly different costumes for Muzzy and the chorus, and it seems like every CATS tour has a different take on the costumes.
Unca: Yikes! 20 seats at the Buell at subscriber prices? How much did that set you back?

I care as well. Costume design major.
Part of the reason Morrible and Kendra look so funny in those costumes is because the are a completely different shape than Carole and Kristen. The costumes were specially designed with the original cast in mind.
Granted I don't know why they changed Kendra's costumes because she would look lovely in the original designs (I like everyone else hate the new skirt).
another note- miss cane's wig and applying the white make-up to her neck makes her look a bit more like a clown as opposed to miss shelley's more victorian look
Rose,
I am only paying for my ticket! I have a block of orchestra seats during the second week.
Yeah I really don't favor the poofiness of the skirt that much but as long as it doesn't affect the singing, dancing etc itself than I'm not too worried about it. Although I do wish that the costumes weren't toned down for the tour since I loved the ones from the New York show so much but what are you going to do?
