Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

Hey Broadwayworld! I'm going to stand up for my rights and let you know that I'm not afraid to post about Wicked. I am Elphie, right? Anyhoo, I started my day in the city with Forbidden Broadway SVU. God, I've never laughed so hard! It was great, the cast was incredible. Okay, Wicked. So Mom and I decided to check out the lottery for the first time ever, knowing we wouldn't win, but just for fun. Sure enough, there were at least 200 people entering. But to make a long story short,we won! Yay! So we get there for the 8:00 showing, and to my complete and total sadness, 3 people were out. First: Rue for Morrible. Okay, not that bad, you guys didn't like her anyway. Second: Michelle for Nessa. Kind of bummed, but the other 4 times I've seen Wicked, she's been there. Third: Megan Hilty was out for Glinda. I've never seen her, and from what I hear, she's not to be missed. But luckily I'm going with my theater company again in April, so I hope she'll be there. So here's my little review:
Stacie Morgan Lewis-Glinda: Once again, I was bummed. But her overall performance was okay, I mean, I've seen Kristin and Jen, who could be better? But Stacie gave it her all, and I was impressed with her Popular and Thank Goodness.
David Ayers-Fiyero: Um, I used to like him, but today not as much. His acting is good, but singing? I don't know. But hey, he's cute, and he looks like a nice guy.
Shoshana Bean-Elphie: Poor Sho! She was very sick tonight! Coughed a lot, and I mean a lot. David even said she was sick, but I'll get to that later. But amazing perfromance, I'm obsessed with her No Good Deed. Although in the car on the way home, my mom was like, "She's no Idina." Of course not! But good job tonight. Kind of bittersweet because if she leaves beofre April, this is my last time seeing her. Bye Shoshana!
Adinah Alexander-Madame Morrible: Okay, Mom thought she was even better than Carole, but I disagree, even though she was good. I always judge my Madame Morribles on their "Wicked Witch" line during Defying Gravity, and I liked hers. So good job Adinah.
Robb Sapp-Boq: He's my second fave Boq! I've tecnically seen 4 Boqs: Christopher F. once, Jeffery K. once, Randy Harrison (once unoffically on a DVD of Kristin's last day), and Robb on Idina's last, and tonight. He's so cute, I thought his voice and acting were great.
Megan Sikora-Nessa: Alright. I've been spoiled 4 times with the talents of Michelle Federer, and I was disapointed to not see her, especially if she leaves within April. But Megan was good, a different approach of Nessa, I think.
Ben Vereen-Wizard: I'm in love with this man! I've never seen him before, just George, and God, he's got energy! He was the most alive one in the cast! I love him, he's so great.
I haven't seen Sean as Dillamond before, so that was fun, glad he got a promotion! But the cast gave a speech afterwards, for Equity Fights AIDS. Shoshana was so sick, she said goodbye, and ran offstage to get ungreenified, proabably so she could leave faster. So David gave the speech, and Robb was behind him, telling him to do this cute kick thingy, but David said only Shoshana could do it, and she wasn't well. Anyways, so amazing to see my fave show again, I can't stay away! But I'm very sad to have missed Megan, hope to see her some time soon. Thanks for putting up with my Wicked review. Please, if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. Good night!

Uhh. When ISN'T Shoshana sick?

Almost every fan review claims Shoshana was sick at that performance.

Personally, I just find it used as an exuse for a poor performance.

And this is NOT directed to you, Elphieisperky.. .re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

ljay, shoshana doesn't miss HALF as many perf. as Idina did.. and her "sick" vocals are still unbelievable, IMHO.

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

here we go again...please see the thread about actors missing performances...that last post was just not nice...
shoshana is sick and has not been feeling well for a couple of weeks but because of the pressure to "GO ON NO MATTER WHAT"..she is TRYING... and she needs to REST..she is not getting the rest she needs..i hope she stays out all weekend and lays in bed....even sick, Shoshana could not give a bad/poor performance..though she is not my favorite peformer on stage...i think she makes VERY strange faces when she sings and i'm not sure why someone hasn't worked with her on that..but anyway..i digress....leave the woman alone...

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

shoshana keeps relapsing more than likely because she isn't allowing herself to rest... and recover
ljay,,,yours was the post i was referring to as not being very nice...not yours benzie...sorry..you posted when i was typing!

Shoshana is amazing and has missed only a handful of performances due to sickness. You do 8 shows a week of any kind and we'll talk ljay. Goodnes. Give it a friggin rest with Shoshana. She is my future wife, after all.

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

No no no no! Shoshana is MinE!!!

Seriously, she has overworked herself greatly with the part but I admire her dedication and determination. Its not easy being a Broadway star (and green for that matter) and Elphaba is very demanding. Don't bash her because shes human after all. I am glad you liked the show however. I will truly miss this cast when they leave in January. But I am expecting great things from all of them in the future too.

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

that role is just too demanding to sing 8 shows a week...
as i stated before...elphie and glinda should be 6 shows a week with an alternate like so many shows do...
the glinda on tour only does 6 shows...you'd think the producers would take the heat off of their leading ladies and try to help them keep their voices in good condition...

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

Michelle seems to be out a LOT since August. So many people I know have missed her. It's kind of funny since for the first two years she hardly missed a show and now she's like "what? it's not January yet? come ON..." or not, I'm just being a snot. It seems that everyone except Michelle plays Nessa the same way. I saw Christy Candler and she was okay but she made the character seem...more sweet and sickeningly co-dependent. She also used her head voice for WWOTE, which I hear is how Jenna and Megan sing it and I prefer it belted.

I think it's fun to see understudies sometimes, I have a lot of respect for them. That's one of my biggest fears, lol, being an understudy...often you have to know at least two if not several more roles. (I know someone who was an ensemble member, understudy for a main supporting role, and understudy for the lead in a national tour and she was amazing at everything she did but I just can't imagine the pressure for that!) I guess I suck at multi-tasking or something.

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

The understudies for Wicked are very good save for Jared Botz who really did not do it for me as a believable Fiyero for all. Still prefer David, evn if he doesnt have the greatest voice, and Norbert. It is also important to note that Megan and Shoshana were understudies before and when they took over, well, we all know how good they can be. I am quite curious to know who will take over when they leave.

Oh and as for Michelle, I do not know. Has she REALLY missed that many performances or are we overexaggerating here? Just 1-2 every 2 weeks should not be something to go nuts over. Perhaps she is needed on occasional nights for rehearshing another play (ie like David did when he was doing Tom Jones)

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

I think if you're trained well you can do Glinda 8 times a week. Kristin did it and sometimes she added C's and an occational F where it wasn't written. Elpheba is just a bitch of a role. MY gosh you'd better be GREAT friends with your mix. You'd also have to train you're mix to wear the belt disguise. THAT track is hellish.

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

I was totally overexagerating about Michelle. I just think it's funny everyone I know seems to have missed her whenever they're in NYC over the span of four months.

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

I know, right? Conspiracy.

In regards to mix, I know what she means. It's impossible to truely belt most of Elphaba's songs and it would be death to one's vocal career to try it 8 shows a week. I have a really strong mix that sounds belty but even so...it's grueling to sing those songs. Anyone who ever takes the role of Elphaba I hope they have a great coach/teacher who helps them keep their chords healthy! Having to sing the notes in "Not That Girl" is pretty low for most girls, and then to have to have a strong mix for "Defying Gravity" and still hit the high notes without straining or switching completely into head voice is tricky. Then "Now That You're Mine" is lyrical and softer, and "No Good Deed" is best if truely belted. Vocal gymnastics!

Glinda is pretty intense too, though. A strong legit is definitely necessary, but also enough range to reach the notes in "Not That Girl" reprise and "For Good".

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

I think the lower notes aren't as low as they sound. I think the lowest for the Glinda track is a low G. That's pretty low, but there are plenty of sopranos walking around singing low G's. The thing about the Glinda track is that it's got every part of the voice on there. It's a vocal buffet.
#18

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

yeah okay well they're low for me lol. I think the last note of "Not That Girl" is F...and the reprise a G? E/F is my limit and at the other end of my range is E/F above high C so I'm not complaining. The first time I heard Sho in April she cracked on that last note and that was painful, but thankfully she hit it just fine in August.

A vocal buffet...haha, it is. I remember seeing an interview with Idina and Kristin where they were talking about this subject, the various difficulties of their roles vocally. It was interesting.

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

Thanks for the enlightment. My knowledge of singing is sooooorely limited given that I have no voice at all. My future is writing the play/musical. Let the guys and gals do all that singing.

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

well some people have different kinds of voices. You're probably a lyric coloratura soprano. You're not meant to be singing low G's. That's usually dramatic soprano fare. But hey I am limited as far as the soprano voice goes. I'm a tenor
#21

re: Wicked day for Elphieisperky...3 cast members out

actually I'm a dramatic soprano, lol. But that's definitely the bottom of my range. I'm strongest singing with my mix from middle C to F/G but I'm comfortable singing down to G, can go as low as E, and I'm comfortable going up to high C but can go to E. Does that make sense?

I thought this article might relate to the Shoshana missing perfomances/sick stuff:

Life after 'Wicked' good show
Shoshana Bean moves on from the green-faced lead
Saturday, November 26, 2005
ALEX PULASKI
NEW YORK -- She's melting.

Beaverton's Shoshana Bean, who's been flying high in "Wicked," Broadway's most popular musical, will walk away from her leading role in early January.

"I'm fried. I'm done. I'm cooked," said the 28-year-old, green-faced (for her role) and nearly ready to take the stage for another sold-out show earlier this month.

"Wicked," which The New York Times has dubbed the "reigning king of the commercial theater," is bringing in $1.2 million a week in ticket sales and shows no signs of slowing after two years on stage. But after 10 months of highs and lows in the show, Bean is ready to switch back to her pursuit of a solo singing career.

Bean, a 1995 Beaverton High graduate, took over the part of Elphaba, the show's green-skinned and supposedly "wicked" witch, in January. She replaced Idina Menzel, who won a Tony in the role.

Bean signed her one-year contract with reservations, chief among them her fear that another spell on Broadway would delay her plans for a pop-singing career. She had spent two years as an original cast member of "Hairspray," but in 2004 left the show and began recording her own music.

Hour after hour in the studio, however, didn't land the prize she coveted: a recording contract.

Her agent convinced her that the "Wicked" role would open up doors in the recording industry and earn her fame.

But Bean never imagined how demanding a leading role could be. She started out loving the attention, the fans clamoring for autographs after the show.

"Then I hated it," she said. It was overwhelming, exhausting. She broke down in tears after one show after finding out that a teenage fan of "Wicked" had died of leukemia.

She started leaving the theater from an out-of-the-way exit to avoid the crowds. And she stretched herself too thin, performing with the Broadway Gospel Choir, singing the national anthem at Knicks and Giants games, taping a performance for a television show.

The strain took its toll. Bean came down with a throat infection in September and missed a handful of "Wicked" performances.

"The next two months," she said, "I'm saying no to everything."

She has come to terms with the attention of fans, she said. She still answers all her fan mail personally.

Despite the unexpected challenges that surfaced, Bean said the last year had been wonderful.

"I've learned a lot about myself," she said. "My ability. My voice. I know so much more about what I'm capable of doing."

After the contract ends, she plans to spend some time with her mother in the Beaverton area and her father in Olympia. Then she wants to find a warm beach somewhere and soak up the sun.

After that, she will be pushing forward in her quest for a solo career. Her manager, Silas White, says he expects her to sign a recording contract this month with a label founded by R&B artist Brian McKnight.

Bean plans to keep her apartment in Queens and fly to Los Angeles and Atlanta for recording sessions.

White said Bean's voice is powerful enough for her to realize her pop-star dreams.

"There's so much junk out there," White said. "We're going to match good songs with an incredible vocalist, not just throw some records out there and see what sticks."

something about that Shoshana article bothered me... I know its very demanding, but they made it sound like she didn't appreciate it at all. I definitely can see where she would have problems and how stressful it all got for her... but did that strike anywone else as ungrateful?
