I have to step up and say I thinkt he choreography for Sweet Charity is awful. Seriously, during "THere's Gotta Be Something Better Than This" I thought they were told to make up whatever steps they wanted.
ANd the thing about CIlento's choreography is that parts of it are from Fosse's original, but he repeats the same themes over and over while Fosse varied them. FOsse also had a knack for making every dancer in the chorus looks as though they each had a very specific character. Cilento can't choreograph for characters. A big sloppy mess, in my opinion.
Oh well. The BRILLIANT Cy Coleman score steals the show..
No thanks to a few horrible arrangements, and some less than great singing.
Well atleast it has the original "I'm The Bravest Individual", and not some 80's dance mix.
Anyway. Janine LaManna and kyra DaCosta are fantastic singers, and really shine.
But getting back to WICKED.......
That Shoshana is amazing!!!!

I prefer the fired tryout girls to LaManna and DeCosta. I've never been a LaManna fan. She plays too much of the hard edge of the character, while I think Natascia Diaz foud a balance between the soft and the rough of the character.

Clinento was very much inspired by Bob Fosse with the Wicked choreography. You can tell that just by watching Dancing Through Life. I personally love the dancing! I find it great that new choreographers are looking at past ones like Fosse for inspiration! For all you who thought the dancing looked like "a community college modern dance recital" I encourage you to research Bob Fosse and learn to appriciate any form of musical theatre dance that isnt just jazz hands!

I didn't see any Fosse in Wicked.
Thank you, finally somebody agrees with me that Ann Reinking should have choreographed Charity!!! Cilento is such a mediocre choreographer.

I also thought Ann Reinking should have done the choreography for Sweet Charity. If she had the dancing would have been great.
Help me here please.
Has Reinking choreographed anything original?
As far as I know she and Gwen Verdon recreated Fosse's choreography for FOSSE and Ann Reinking rearranged Bob Fosse's choreography for CHICAGO. Didn't the program for Chicago state "In the style of Bob Fosse"?
Yeah. Ann created her own moves for CHICAGO, but it's in his style. Though "Hot Honey Rag" was COMPLETELY Fosse's original choreography.
Ann choreographed and conceived "The Look of Love" in 2003. Which was original choreo.
And she choreographed Bebe's off broadway show "Here Lies Jenny."
I'd like to see "Here Lies Jenny" and "The Look of Love".
I've seen her choreography for The Joffrey Ballet.
Thanks ljay. :)

Actually I think Reinking's choreography for Chicago is sloppy, especially compared to Rob Marshall's choreography in the film. Hers just looks too forced.
^ WHOA.
The movies choreography totally fails in comparison for me.
Marshall didn't impress me at all. He dumbed down a lot for Renee, which was obvious.
And the show has some great dance numbers not in the movie. "Me and My Baby", and "When Velma Takes The Stand."
A Tony well deserved for Reinking!
"Ann choreographed and conceived "The Look of Love" in 2003. Which was original choreo." as i recall one of the more scathing reviews said something to the effect of "mr. fosse would be rolling in his grave knowing his protoge seems to be stuck on "number 17... the spread eagle"

Maybe her choreography looked better with the original cast, but I just saw the show again last week and thought it was sloppy, repetitive, and forced. Perhaps the dancers just aren't good enoough. Whatever the case, I thought it was awful. I thought Marshall did a great job with the film. Paying a tribute to Fosse as opposed to copying him.
But Ann didn't copy Fosse, where are you getting that from? Ann created HER OWN moves for CHICAGO, in HIS STYLE. And for HOT HONEY RAG she kept his original choreography, as a true tribute to him.
Even Gwen Verdon herself said she thought the revival was better than her original version! Now that says something.
I'm just a little suprised you feel that way about Ann. Usually Fosse fans are very fond of Ann, Fosse was her mentor and all.

Ann did not want to do Charity because the Weisslers wanted to go in the direction opposite of Fosse's known style. She choreographs in his style and was not interested in creating something completely different from his style.
I don't blame her. I'm glad she stayed away from the whole mess.

Well, as I said, perhaps it was the performers. It looked way too forced. I did admire her work in Fosse (the revue).
Pippin. Are you sure Ann felt that way? I never heard she was even considered.
Wayne's name has been with a Charity revival since the late 90's. There was a revival planned with him directing and Paula Abdul choreographing AND starring, but that fell through. Then the Weissler's got the rights for the revival, and he was the choreographer obviously. So Wayne has been with a revival of Charity longer than anyone part of this production. Besides Coleman, and Simon - obviously.

Fosse ignorance hurts my heart and my head. You're gonna have to fight this battle without me ljay! I can't deal with it!!!
Yeah, WonderBoy.. I think I'm giving up on this battle myself.
I rarely ever here that people think the movie choreography is better than the revival's choreography.. and when I do hear this, I get a little defensive.
