i was trying to think if teeny-boppers have always been foaming at the mouth about shows the same way they are with "Wicked", and while i don't think so i can remember for me in high school "Phantom" was the shiznit and in college if you didn't know all the words to "Rent" you were a loser.

I don't think Wicked is as bad as Rent was.

"foaming at the mouth" so true, so true. Does this mean we have to put them down?

Teenagers love a good outsider story. Rent and Wicked fit the bill.

I don't think I go a day at my school where I don't see a person wearing a "Defy Gravity" shirt or one that just says "Wicked." That's what I get for going to a school that takes kids on field trips to see Wicked...though. I don't regret going in 8th grade to see the OBC on a field trip. What sealed it for my town is that Stephen Schwartz lives here and in 8th grade came and spoke to my class. And well, ta da.

"teeny-boppers"

That's the stupidest term to describe any group, not to mention being extremely dated and inaccurate. It's a term coined by people who are generally old and bitter towards youth. This isn't 1950. That said, big spectacle shows have always had a good opportunity to grab younger audiences, with varying degrees of success. RENT appealed more to a college-aged crowd when it debuted, whereas Wicked is crossing the generational divide.

A Chorus Line debuted when I was in High School-- out in the Chicago Burbs-- and that made Wicked-worship look like Ring of Fire worship. They had to ban "What I Did For Love" from school talent shows.

A show has never really been so targeted at teen girls and boys as much as Wicked before. RENT was more aimed at college students, so it wasn't quite as bad with the screaming and such.

I know that Wicked gets a lot of attention, not just from word of mouth by teenagers, but also adults. My little brother, who's in middle school, his principal is obsessed and has seen the show 10 times. I think the thing with Wicked is that it's aimed at both young and old.

I think Wicked is sucessful because it appeals to all ages. The little kids love the effects and the monkeys. The teens like the story of the "outsider." And to be blunt, both theatre lovers in HS are "outsiders," myself included. And the adults love the beauty of the friendship.

I'm a teen, but definately not a teeny bopper haha. Never screamed or attacked people. Sorry to disappoint.

The defensiveness exhibited by certain teenagers in this thread belies their claim that this show's appeal is not especially prominent in the teenage population...

Pre-teens and early teenages "foam at the mouth" about anything they really like, or something popular, or a craze. When I was 13, all my friends were that way over the Backstreet Boys. It drove me crazy. Honestly, knowing that this is their temperament, I'm thrilled that they're allowing musical theatre to become part of their huge passion.

Yeah like someone said before, Wicked is popular because it is basically a musical for all ages. The little ones like the effects, the adolescents love the "outsider" story and the adults love it even more because they grew up with The Wizard if Oz and also the hidden politics behind it.

oh who cares! The good thing is that they are getting into theatre. In time some of them may tire of WICKED and start looking at other musicals and they will discover others that are even better. I would rather they obsess over WICKED than some reincarnation of the Backstreet Boys or some such.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I think it's nice that younger kids are getting into musical theatre, although it does get annoying when all they talk about are Wicked or Rent. The teeny-boppers will grow out of it and hopefully move on to some mature theatre. Kids are kids after all.

I have noticed that the younger ones tend to go absolutely crazy over Wicked. I love it, but I'd much rather foam at the mouth over musical theatre in general. But like Ive said once Ill say it again its brings a new generation into the musical theater world, why be hatin?

Wicked is really for everyone, but more geared towards that middle school crowd that care about popularity and makeup, etc., etc. Hopefully the kids that get hooked on that show will see more shows than JUST Wicked. Hairspray is what did that for me.
