Hey all... hoping you guys can help me with some good advice. My wife and I will be visiting NYC next week and we wanted to see a broadway show while we were in town. Everytime we have gone, we have tried to get lottery tickets for Wicked! but have failed every time. We're going to try again this time, but if we dont get them (which i'm sure we wont) then what should we see?
Let me give u a quick rundown on the most recent shows we saw in the last few years... we loved all these shows: Hairspray, The Producers, Chicago, Avenue Q (our favorite). We loved how fun they all were, and how good the music was.
What good shows are out right now? we feel like we havent really heard anything about any particular show being the "it" show of the moment...
what should we see? recomendations?

thanx somethingwicked!
we're really hoping to score tickets for "wicked"... but we have tried wining the lottery about 5 times, and have lost every single time. one time there were only about 30 people there, and we thought for sure we'd get it... and nothing! :)
whats the word on "Jersey Boys"? i saw that it won the Tony for Best Musical... but is it any good? i'm sure its hard to get tickets to... but what does everyone think about it?

Jersey Boys will be hard to get tickets to.
But what I recomend is Sweeny Todd. It will still be here next week and should be easy to get tickets to. To be able to be Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris would be a real treat.
Have fun!

thanks guys... i had actually never even heard of "Sweeny Todd" but am checking it out right now. Maybe we'll see that one if "Wicked" fails us once again.
any other suggestions? we were surfing the website for TKTS and nothing seems appealing at all... i remember the last time we were in NYC there were so many shows we wanted to see. Now, nothing grabs our attention.

"Jersey Boys" is fantastic, but hard to get tickets to. You'd have to wait in the rush line from the wee hours of the morning...
If you are willing to pay full price for "Wicked," do the cancellation line maybe?

If you want a fun show, try: The Drowsy Chaperone, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
However, if you want to try going out of your comfort zone, i strongly suggest Sweeney Todd. It is a fantastic show, and it is really a fantastic theatrical experience. Try to catch it before it closes. However, if you do decide to see Sweeney, try to familiarize yourself with the plot. That will be helpful, but there are a few twists and turns of plot, so if you pay a tention during the show, you should understand what is going on.

When we saw "The Producers", we bought Rush Tickets. We showed up to the theater about 1 hour before it opened, and were the only people in line when the booths opened.
How early would we have to get there if we wanted to try and get Rush Tickets for "Jersey Boys"??? i'd love to try... but not sure how early we should be there.

Judging by your tastes, I would say "Drowsy Chaperone." But I do have to reiterate the suggestion of "Sweeney Todd" - it's absolutely amazing, extremely inventive with a RIDICULOUSLY talented cast. It would be a great way to expand your horizons a bit.
But otherwise, Drowsy is great!

thanx all for your advice... this is such a tough decision. we usually go to NYC two or three times a year and see multiple shows while there, but we just got married, are a little broke, and can only go out to NYC 1 time this year... for 1 day only!
so we're limited to seeing 1 show... and wanna make the best choice. blah!
my favorite show that i ever saw was without a doubt "Avenue Q". i laughed so hard i cried... shortly followed by "The Producers". We've also seen other shows like "Les Mis", etc etc... but those arent really our types of shows. They're great and all... but we like to have fun and a good time when we see a show.

everyone seems to be recommending "Sweeney"... so it may be the one we see. I was on their website reading up on it a bit... seems really interesting.
Is it supposed to be a dark comedy? or a serious drama? it looks creepy and dark and twisted and fun!

I really have to back out on all the Sweeney recomendations. If you're really into a great fun night that's going to make you want to laugh so hard you cry, I wouldn't exactly see a Sondheim thriller about a murderous barber (as much as I love it to death).
I think the best show for you personally would be The Wedding Singer. It's quite cute and loads of fun. You're sure to have a good time.

If you're looking for fun, you could check out The Wedding Singer.
However, my first recommendation (surprise, surprise) would be Sweeney Todd. It's pretty twisted with a lot of dark humor, and it's a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience. If you're looking for something captivating, creepy, and interesting, see it! The tickets are pretty easy to get at this point, and it won't be around for much longer.

eh... not sure The Wedding Singer appeals to me... looks TOO cute and cheesy... what we loved about Avenue Q and The Producers was the hilarious sarcastic humor, the sharp comedy, and the great music... The Wedding Singer, while i'm sure a great show, seems just a bit too cheesy.
I'm reading up on "Drowsy" right now... seems fun too. but from all the recomendations... Sweeney seems to be the best show to see.
i'm just not sure if its a serious drama... or a dark comedy? if its going to be really serious and dramatic, then it may not be the best choice for us this time around (even tho under normal circumstances, we would have loved to have seen it, along with several other shows... like we ususally do)... since we really only have time for 1 show, we wanna laugh and have fun.
this is tough!! :) i appreciate all the advice u guys are throwin my way

Sweeney is extraordinarily serious and dramatic. You can't get any more serious than Sweeney. There are some moments that are just plain dark humor (though it's just... really creepy... and not funny), but if you want to have a good time, go with Drowsy. It's hilarious and brilliant.
Drowsy is all 20's music, though. I don't know, if you really loved the music in Q and the Producers, I'm just worried you'll get too bored... a lot of people didn't like the show because they were used to contemporary things (ex - the Wedding Singer, insanely pop-y), and simply thought it was boring. I see Drowsy as a real theater dork show, but I guess I'm being insane.
And yes, I haven't slept in... a while. This is why my grammar is worse than a 12-year-old's.

The only problem with the current production of Sweeney is, if you're unfamiliar with the show, it might be a little hard to follow. The staging is very minimalist/artistic, and it could be hard to tell what exactly is going on unless you're somewhat familiar with the plot.
Don't get me wrong, it's one of the best productions playing right now. But there is a reason it hasn't grabbed the tourist industry as much as other productions.
And it is very serious (it has it's darkly humorous moments, but it is overall a dramatic show). If you want to have fun and laugh, Sweeney is not your best bet.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride.
I love you because I know no other way than this.
I believe in fate
But it's up to us to follow through

Posted: 8/10/06 at 4:07amWell, I didn't want to see The Wedding Singer, but i wanted to see Amy Spanger(who was dazzling in Tick Tick Boom! and Kiss Me, Kate) and then against all the odds, i ended up loving TWS. So if you try it, im sure you won't be dissappointed, i thought it was gonna be cheesy and horrible and it really surprised me. But what the hell, your loss, it's wonderful.

I can't believe I'm saying this...but after reading this thread, I think you should see THE WEDDING SINGER.
I loved SWEENEY, but I think part of the reason why I loved it was because I had the show memorized before I walked into the theater. If you don't know the show at all, it might be confusing.
