I love him. Such a great performer. Especially enjoyed his performance in "The Mystery of Edwin Drood." Also very excited to see him at 54 Below at one of the High Fidelity concerts. Hope to see him back on Broadway very soon!!
I think he was way too hysterical as Chris in Miss Saigon. Especially in contrast with the singing of Lea salonga which is much more heartfelt and true and controlled.
Drood was the first thing of which I was impressed, and I'm looking forward to see what's next.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I found him miscast in DROOD, but his performance in PIPE DREAM was one of the best musical theatre performances I've ever seen. You should all pick up the live cast recording if you haven't already.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body
I'm so sorry that my intro to him was in Smash. His character, as are most in that show, was poorly conceived and poorly written. His character's casting as Joe DiMaggio in Bombshell was ludicrous, almost as bad as casting Harvey Fierstein as Margaret Thatcher would be. However, I just this minute finished listening to him on the CD of the recent production of Pipe Dream and he sounded fantastic.
I agree with Sam that his character was poorly written on SMASH but in comparison with this year's character of Jimmy, I'll take Will Chase any day. However, I was not overly impressed with him in Drood, a bit too over the top for my taste. Not to mention the amount of saliva coming out of his mouth (3rd row) was a real turnoff. People have mentioned that he was very good in Nice Work but did not see him there, so I cannot comment. Hopefully, he will get a role that showcases his talent a bit better.
The only review of a show that matters is your own.
