The Light in the Piazza is a gorgeous show. I was rewatching the PBS presentation last night, and I got so wrapped up in the characters again. When Victoria Clark is talking to her husband on the phone, I just felt this huge rush of emotion. And the design elements, along with the staging and the music - it's just beautiful. I think it won the awards it should have, but I wish it had won Best Musical. Spamalot would have done fine with winning that title, but Piazza could have transfered for a more commercial run, or at least done better on tour. I'm still suprised it's not touring.
Actually, it is. Piazza came to Denver this last March.

Yeah, I know it toured, but it's not anymore. I would think it would have toured more than just one season. I was really looking forward to seeing it "LIVE," but then it stopped touring.

Wow, I didnt realize I saw all four nominated shows from that year until now...
I have to say, I absolutely adored Spamalot (if youre a monty python fan, its fantastically good fun and even if youre not- i think the show is just funny) and I couldnt stand Light in the Piazza (excellent acting, but I found the music forgettable and the entire evening dull).
But I think both Dirty Rotten Scoundrels AND Spelling Bee were better shows, overall. Spamalot won so it could tour with BEST MUSICAL TONY WINNER emblazoned on its billing. No question.
(I didnt get to see Ramirez, though Lauren Kennedy was less than exciting in the role...)

I finally saw Spamalot. Glad I didn't rush.
I agree with Wanna Be A Foster completely. EVERY Tony Award that year really belonged to Piazza.
Is it just me...
or when they first announced Clay Aiken would join Spamalot...I was surprised that he will be Sir Robin...I would have cast him as The Historian/Not Dead Fred/Prince Herbert.
Or would that hit a little below the belt/be a little too close to home? (No offense to the Claymates that might be reading!)
PS...saw Spamalot again last week (the TDF gods were really nice with the seats) and really enjoyed this current cast - Hadary and Mazzie are great in their roles, and speaking of Not Dead Fred -- Tom Deckman is wickedly funny.
stagescreen, I must agree with you. When I first heard this news, I too could not picture him in the role. I believe you hit the proverbial nail there, my friend.

It is a real shame Piazza did not win. The order should have been
Piazza
Bee
DRS
Spamalot (tie with drs)
I was completely underwhelmed by DRS, which I know is an unpopular opinion.

Well now that we have gone almost completely off-topic, I thought I would throw in my two cents and say Ramirez deserved Featured Actress and DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS should have won Best Musical.
stagecreen, I totally agree with you. I see Clay as a Prince Herbert. But of course, the part barely sings at all so of course you can't have a runner up of American Idol in a part that doesn't sing (which is also sad for Christian Borle cause even though he owned that role, he should have been given more to sing.)
I have to say, I enjoyed Spamalot. I like to go to a show to be entertained and that is what I got when i saw it. True, I didn't learn anything from it, but it was still fun. Though I thought Tim Curry phoned in his performance. He was so unexcited about doing the role and I saw it in the first month it opened. But I have to say that Sara Ramirez deserved that award. She OWNED the stage when she was on it, and that is hard to do.
But best musical I believe should have gone to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. It had catchy tunes, the costumes were fantastic, set was gorgeous, great adaptation from movie, and the cast was superb.
Now that so many movie adaptation musicals are coming out, I think they need a Best Adaptation Musical instead of just having a Best Musical.
I went into SPAMALOT not expecting to like it very much. I came out a HUGE fan. I have seen it once more since that first night and liked it even better.
I thought SPELLING BEE was sweet, sincere and funny, but it just played more like an off-Broadway show.
I abhored DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. Thought it tried too hard to be too many other shows and preferred Yazbeck's MONTY score.
I've only seen the PIAZZA PBS broadcast, so I will refrain from direct comparison, but I had no problem with SPAMALOT's TONY win.
I finally saw Spamalot yesterday - WTF? Not so good.
Is a money note, the same as a money shot?
Close, but NO!
I hear Clay may get a verse of "FIND YOU'RE GIRL".
I mean "GRILL"
I think that BEE deserved it's awards. I think DRS could have won best senci design, but PIAZZA was just stunning. I wish they released it on DVD. I think PIAZZA should have won best musical and that Lincoln Center bought the old Mark Hellinger, refurbished it, and put PIAZZA in their. Just a wish. :^)

It's called an "Opinion." You can't empirically prove one show better than another- it's all just a matter of taste. To say a show doesn't succeed because it's "Ahead of it's time"? Well, let's all get together in 50 years and see about that, OK?
Personally, I'm glad there are all types of shows- because there are all types of people. I took my In-laws to see Spamalot and they are still raving about it years later.
Hopefully Clay's stint won't do much for Spamalot and it'll close. It isn't very good. In fact, it's ****. Piazza should have swept the Tonys completely that year. Another Tony that brilliant show should have won- Best Book over Spelling Bee's "book."
I hated Light In The Piazza on PBS. Imagine if I saw it live.
I loved Spamalot and Light in the Piazza. Spamalot makes me laugh so hard. I don't care if the jokes were used in other Monty Python movies/shows, I think it is hilarious.
Light in the Piazza was beautiful. I never had the chance to see it live, but I loved the music and the PBS presentation.
Clay and money notes? No, hopefully they won't change anything for Clay. I agree that Sir Robin is an odd part--- actually any part in Spamalot is surprising. I'm interested to hear that British accent.
I doubt he'll put one on.
