I wasn't comparing myself to Brantley or Isherwood, I was comparing my feelings about the production and LuPone's performance with theirs.

Just something to throw onto the fire:
The "West Side Story" revival, directed by Arthur Laurents, seems to be going full steam ahead as well. Last I heard, they were shopping around for someone to cast it.
Wouldn't "Gypsy" and "West Side Story" playing side-by-side be exciting?

I think it would be perfect for Laurent's goodbye to Broadway to be dueling revivals of Gypsy and WSS.

"My biggest problem with her performance was the fact that she, not Patrick Vaccariello, was clearly in control of the tempos. She spead through half of those songs like a runaway freight train...if you had trouble figuring out what she was saying to begin with, you didn't have half a chance after hearing the speed of songs...especially a number like "Everything's Coming up Roses," which sounded as though she did the final "everything's coming up bright lights..." section in one gigantic gulp and was racing to finish before she lost her wind.
That, and the fact that her fanbase was out of control, as Isherwood pointed out."
Agreed. I like "Some People" taken at a very fast tempo. Merman sounds lathargic on the cast album. Patti's tempo was wonderful. However, I think Patti took "Roses" way too fast.
And the fans were crazy. I'm a big Patti fan, but I would never and have never acted like this durring one of her performances.
Still, I did like her. I would love to see it on Broadway for a few months.
