Everyone is talking about LuPone, and yes, she was great. But the main reason I would see the show at the St.James is to re-live the experience of Laura Benanti's and Leigh Ann Larkin's astonishing performances, as well as Marilyn Caskey's Electra.

I have seen Merman, Lansbury, Daly, and Peters in my favorite musical. I could not get to NYC this summer; if I had I would surely have gone to see Patti LuPone at the City Centre. So, selfishly, I would love for GYPSY to have a limited run at the St. James, hoping that if marketed well it would be a success. Also, I thought this proposed revival was a sure thing, with Laurents wanting to do it so badly. I thought that WEST SIDE STORY was a possibility for the 2008-2009 season.

Thanks Margo! I was very curious about that. So Gypsy will be tied with three other shows. Interesting about all those Porgy and Bess revivals, especially since the last one was in 1983 at Radio City. But wasn't there an announcement for the revised London production as well? I guess it will still lead the pack.

Trevor Nunn did that reduced version of PORGY last year and is presently in town doing ROCK N ROLL. It's officially still coming some time next year (even though it didn't do well at the box office or with many critics).
I saw that last revival at Radio City and it was fantastic -- and HUGE (and by the way, the Tony Administration Committee named it an eligible production and Radio City an eligible Tony house JUST for that production). Not sure how I feel about a stripped down version of the show for Broadway. I'm not anxious to hear that score with a small orchestra and opera chorus -- it just loses too much. Frankly I wish the Met would revive its production sometime soon with a cast of 100+ and the full (enormous) Met orchestra. THAT'S how the show should sound and look.

I saw patti play the role in chicago and I talked to her about the encores production over dinner (thats another story though) and she said she has never been in a show like this production. She said laurents finally let the actors do as they wanted and that the takes on some of the roles were so real that arthur started to cry he was so happy. I think if Laurents wants to do this I say do it because to see Patti play this role again would be incredible.

I saw Patti play Rose at Ravinia and in at the City Center. I'd love for there to be a revival. A friend of mine knows the girl who played young Louise at the City Center and apparently they've been talking to her about bringing it back. Here's hoping.
There wouldn't be lights bright enough!

Smaxie, I'm impressed that the original pit orchestra for GYPSY was comprised of 29 players. For the original production, they spared no expense in any department--it showed it! Gone are the good old days in matters such as this.

I was one of the few Patti naysayers (the other 2 were Isherwood and Brantley).
My biggest problem with her performance was the fact that she, not Patrick Vaccariello, was clearly in control of the tempos. She spead through half of those songs like a runaway freight train...if you had trouble figuring out what she was saying to begin with, you didn't have half a chance after hearing the speed of songs...especially a number like "Everything's Coming up Roses," which sounded as though she did the final "everything's coming up bright lights..." section in one gigantic gulp and was racing to finish before she lost her wind.
That, and the fact that her fanbase was out of control, as Isherwood pointed out.

I wasn't comparing myself to Brantley or Isherwood, I was comparing my feelings about the production and LuPone's performance with theirs.
