Will Gypsy transfer?

I'm desperate for information about the possible Gypsy Broadway transfer, as I haven't heard anything for over a week.

Does anyone know where they are in negotiations? Any talk of it having fallen through?

that would be the most amazing thing since sliced bread, but it won't happen. Gypsy had a revival in 2003 so I would think it's too soon, but don't get me wrong. I WOULD DIE if they transfered Patti in Gypsy to Broadway

personally, i would rather Laurents focus on West Side Story coming to Broadway moreso than this. but i'm not knocking it. i loved the LUPONE Encores! production so i'd see it again.

Amen Philcrosby-those debates would kill me too! I am in favor of not seeing another Gypsy revival right now, even though Lupone got raves. I think everyone who wanted to see it saw it since the run was not a sellout.

I didn't get to see it. I was working out of town the entire summer, and was pretty bummed about that.

Well LuPone didn't get across the board raves. The NY Times review was pretty tepid towards her, and there were just as many people who detested in her in the role as thought she was brilliant.

Bottom line is, there will never be a Rose that is universally loved. At this point, the role is too iconic.

I personally think bringing this back to the St. James would be akin to taking 8 million dollars and setting it on fire in Shubert Alley. The production wouldn't make a nickel.

I agree with the post that said I'd rather see Laurents focus on WEST SIDE STORY.

I love Patti and would love a transfer, but it does seem a little soon. Would Patti be to old (for Rose) if they brought it back in 2013 or so? A recreation of the City Center production since Laurents may not still be around. I also agree with Folky about West Side Story.

LuPone is just about too old for the role now, considering the real Rose Havoc had Louise when she was a teenager. Technically, Rose should be about 40.

I think the whole point of them wanting to rush this transfer now is not only Patti's age - but Laurents wants to completely wipe the last revival from his memory and he wants the last GYPSY revival of his lifetime to be HIS.

I think it would be awesome to have a dueling WSS and GYPSY by Laurents on Broadway.

If this revival occurs, I believe it will be tied with Show Boat for musicals with the most number of Broadway revivals at 4 each. I can't think of any other musicals with that many.

I think Laurents should have free rein over both shows to be honest. He clearly thinks he's the only one that can do justice to "his" shows (as if no one else was part of the original creative team)....Does anyone remember his nasty radio interview? Talking about how pissed off he was that the Sam Mendes directed revival "had no walls". I thought it was a very clever set. Actually, one of the best sets I've seen for ANY broadway production. Because, for instance, Mary Poppins is not about the story and plot lines..It's about the flowers coming up from beneath the stage, and Mary making things come out of her carpet bag, and the flying, and fiberoptic stars, etc. Gypy's set was simple. It let you focus on the amazing talent on stage rather than be fooled by some detailed walls in Rose's house. Laurents however, HATED that production...I say, he wont be happy until he can put his Dolly Levi "hand in there"

And on a more personal note. I don't think the Patti championed production should have a broadway run...She's a broadway legend, that's for sure. But I don't think that that should be your Legend "right of passage", to play the iconic role of Rose. Too many revivals and it loses some of its meaning. It becomes more of an audition than a production to see who can play the role better...

- But isn't that the FUN of it for the audience and GYPSY fans? There are people who can they say they've seen Merman, Lansbury, Daly, Peters, Buckley, and LuPone. That's INCREDIBLE. And they have every right to compare them.

Thats the fun for the fans, but not the producers who are loosing millions of dollars on these revivals. And I think its safe to say that the GYPSY fans for the most part had their chance at City Center. And collectively, they couldn't even sell out a three week run.

Peter Pan? Well...that's stretching it a bit. The 1991 production was a return of the 1990 production. The 1999 production was a return of the 1998 production. All four of which starred Cathy Rigby. So technically, there have only been three revivals of Peter Pan, which includes the 1979 Sandy Duncan production.

The morning the reviews came out, Regis Philbin mentioned it on "Live." He seemed excited that Patti got raves from the Post (Live's paper of choice), Kelly sang the "I have a dream" chorus as per her usual, and the audience couldn't care less about Gypsy or Patti Whopone.

It was very telling. A revival of Gypsy nowadays is a surefire flop.

PORGY & BESS has had 6 revivals, while MAN OF LA MANCHA and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF have had 4 a piece.

Unless you put Streisand in the title role. Then, it'll sell for YEARS!

But, of course, Streisand is both too old for the role and uninterested in returning into the 8 show a week Broadway work schedule.
