While its win is a foregone conclusion, this thread has made me realize it's been a pretty bad year for new musicals, with some exceptions.
I imagine without Hamilton, Shuffle Along wouldn't be doing everything in its power to be considered a revival and would probably be the front runner.

No because it has not won anything important before the TONYS

With or without Hamilton, Shuffle Along is absolutely not a revival of Shuffle Along.
But it's hard to imagine it as a frontrunner in either category this season.
Gypsy why do you demoralize Allegiance to join the trolls?

I think Waitress would win Best Musical and Best Score if not for Hamilton. Danny Burstein would finally win his long awaited Tony Award, and maybe Chris Fitzgerald would also win?
I'm hoping Burstein still has a chance.

What is?

He could for several reasons.
1. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom, Jr. could split the vote and Tony voters would just be spreading the wealth a little (Robert Lindsay winning for Me & My Girl over Colm Wilkinson and Terrence Mann in Les Miserables; Norbert Leo Butz winning for Catch Me If You Can over Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad in The Book of Mormon).
2. There's gonna be a real race for Best Revival of a Musical this year, and I think a Lead Actor win for Danny Burstein would be a great way to acknowledge Fiddler on the Roof.
3. You sometimes hear Tony voters say "Well that's gonna win, but I'm gonna vote for something else."
4. Of all the potential nominees for Lead Actor in a Musical, he's been around the Broadway community the longest.

I think the "he/she is overdue" argument has three paths:
1) "I enjoyed all performances equally and I could vote for any of them, let me vote for______ because he/she's overdue"
2) "Wow Actor A was superb but Actor B was pretty good and is overdue, I should vote for Actor A but I don't know..."
3) "This is a weak year and I didn't love anyone but I'll vote for him/her because he/she is overdue"
It's my opinion (and I know some of you disagree) that last year was Situation 1 and this year would be more of a Situation 2. I think people have been talking about Lin and Leslie's performances way more than Danny's and that it's less like Situation 1 than last year's Actress race. Then again, I saw nothing special at all in Danny's portrayal and still get chills when I think about Leslie's. Overdue or not, if I was a voter I could not in good not in good faith bypass one of the more deserving performances this year just because Danny has been nominated five other times.
Which situation do the voters find themselves in this year? That is what will determine this race.
