I bet the hair was more memorable. Not in picture: long, straight sideburns

I saw the stage production of 'The Phantom of the Opera' once. I didn't care for it. I hated the style of singing and the over the top dramatics. That was at least 10 years ago. This year I was watching HBO and the movie version came on. I decided to watch and loved it. I prefer the more pop/rock vocals. I'm new to the whole Team Raoul or Team Phantom phenomenon. Still don't get why any girl would go for
a crazy murderer ... I thought Patrick was great and I loved the hair.
Yeah, if it's a stunt double's ass in Angels, then they used the same guy for Little Children... :P
Gypsy, check out Angels in America--like most plays, it works better on stage, but is a worthy adaptation, and Patrick stands out in it (I think).
And I'm agog that you have never seen Oklahoma! on stage
(I suppose the only redeeming value I find in the film of Phantom, besides some of the performances, is that Shumacker ups the camp quotient. Actually I almost wish he would have upped it more, if he was going in that direction anyway--who knows what the failed Ken Russell film coulda been--a mess, but maybe a fun mess. I am surprised anyone could forget Wilson's hair though--his performance, as much as I do think he's a great actor, not so much).
Ken Russell would have made it far more intriguing. Not the failed Oscar bait that we now have. But, I think the failure is ALW's iron hand on his material.
I agree. More and more he seems to be his own worst ennemy--which is too bad, because I think he *does* have, whether one likes his work or not, an inate sense of theatricality. He just needs to learn to trust those around him more (he even seems to choose his lyricists not on talent, but on the fact that he's willing to have final say over them). To be fair, while I'm not a fan, Shumacker was relatively subdued with the movie.
EricMontreal22. Patrick looks like Albert Nobbs in that Julie Andrews tribute link. XD
How very dare of you! (Ok, maybe I see it a bit...)

I just found this compilation video of all kinds of Patrick Wilson singing. It includes several things I'd never heard including a bit from Allegro and Lucky in the Rain. It also has clips from Oklahoma (People will think) and the Full Monty (Breeze Across the River). This video isn't that old, but it got buried amongst 'A Gifted Man' and 'Prometheus' and 'Watchmen' stuff.
Patrick Wilson Sings
He needs to do a solo show like Hugh Jackman did except without a costume designer.

I'd be fine if he went on stage without a costume
or even figured out a way out of his costume while on stage

He is such a non-entity in that movie, it's like watching invisible ink fade away. Kushner had to add a scene with him at the end just so audiences would remember he had been in the story at all.
"Hey, weren't you in a movie?" completely honestly sums up the issue with Patrick Wilson.
His best bet, not that I think he has it in him, would be to pull of an unexpectedly (which in my case is the only way it'd be possible) great Broadway performance that makes the world sit up and take notice. Let's face it, it was a total let down when he took the Hugh Jackman role in "Oklahoma!" and it's been one disappointment after another from him. He almost had a chance with "Full Monty," but he really did nothing after that to help his career.
^What movie were you watching? I remember the scene on the beach vividly.
Namo, while it sounds like he's never impressed you, I'm curious if you found him as forgettable in Little Children?
I adore him in "Angels in America." Nails it.
I think he's the best actor Hollywood's got to play the "boring guy" roles. It's actually a feat I've found in him to come off so unbelievably bland (I'm trying to make this complimentary...) on screen. He's wonderful in mostly everything I've seen him in. He's basically playing sexy wallpaper in "Young Adult" and does it very, very well.

Patrick totally amazing in ANGELS in one of the least showy roles, naked scene on beach heartbreaking. Also great in LITTLE CHILDREN, and even in the routine TV series that's been cancelled. I've been a fan since he did the juvenile lead in Encores' TENDERLOIN years ago, and yes, he should be back on Broadway!

And now we know why Patrick Wilson isn't doing a Broadway show this fall: he's going to have a role in HBO's 'Girls' in season 2.

I asked him this very question when I met him in Montclair, NJ at a film festival. He actually made it sound like he's involved with something, but "they" (I'm guessing producers) were watching to see what was closing. Almost like, one show was about to open, and then when that closed, another show would move in... and his show would follow that. It was vague obviously, but seemed as though he had to wait for the failure of two other shows before his show could debut. I think we can take away that he's trying to get back to the stage, but things are pending.
I know he does want to stay close to his home in NJ for the sake of his kids, which is why he hasn't been doing a lot recently. He's trying to find opportunities nearby.
His show, A Gifted Man, was shot in NYC, so that he could stay with his family.
I would love to see him back on Broadway.
Wonder what the planned show is.

Via Twitter, Patrick made it clear that though he was planning on heading to Broadway earlier this year, he couldn't make it work with his schedule and he has no plans currently. I'm assuming this new project ('Girls' on HBO) is one of the reasons. Other projects I'm aware of are a movie ('Zipper') about a polititian obsessed with "escorts" and a possible sequel to Prometheus. Broadway seems unlikely now. Really too bad.
Shooting "Girls" is not that much of a commitment. It's only ten episodes. It's already shooting. Andrew Rannels appeared in four of last season's.
Can anyone explain a world in which Tom Cruise is a bigger star and a bigger sex symbol than Patrick Wilson?
Not only planning to head to Broadway, the contract was drawn up and everything. It's only recently that he dropped out, so the conflicting project may be something that hasn't been announced yet.

I just watched Angels at the Wilma yesterday, and the play really does change when you have a good Joe. I didn't think Wilson was terrible in the miniseries, but honestly, no one in it was great except Jeffrey Wright.
