Posted: 7/13/12 at 5:14pmI don't know if this has been asked before - sorry if it has, but I will ask anyway - Do you think the Central Park Into the Woods will be recorded for television or for DVD release - or will it be recorded for CD release? What are the chances of this happening? The 2002 revival was recorded on CD and the OBC has both CD and DVD recordings... Maybe because of the cast (Amy Adams, Donna Murphy etc.) they will record it...? I think it's awful the London version wasn't released on DVD

Probably no on all counts, but if the Broadway transfer happens, you can probably expect a new cast recording.
And DVDs of Broadway casts are always rare. If anything, I wish American Idiot had filmed a commercial DVD. Seems like it would have been a smart move with all the Green Day fans out there.

Posted: 7/13/12 at 5:33pmBut in terms of a DVD recording, this one might be possible since the Regent's Park production was filmed... And also, since they filmed 2011 NY Phil's Company... But still, maybe not.

Other than having the same composer, what connection is there between the NY Philharmonic's production of Company and this upcoming production of Into the Woods? I don't see how the fact that Company is getting a DVD release has any bearing on whether or not Into the Woods will receive one.

The Regent's Park filming was a pretty special circumstance, I've heard. It is a *great* record of the production though--I just wish now that I've bought it I could figure out a way to somehbow burn it to a DVD and watch it anywhere but on my computer.
And yes they recorded Company, but ITW has been filmed, and *they* never filmed Follies

One of the major film studios (Disney with Rob Marshall directing) is developing a film version of INTO THE WOODS. Disney no doubt has a contractual stipulation forbidding any filmed stage production while they have a big budget movie in development.

Posted: 7/13/12 at 6:09pmIf someone wouldn't pay for FOLLIES why would they pay for WOODS, which has already been recorded twice on video and at least two times in English on audio, and is getting a film release. They'd have to be a massive, massive fan...

Three times on CD in English...

Posted: 7/13/12 at 6:36pmCan the damn production open first before this becomes a conversation? Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for the show and hope I get to see it, but no one has even seen it yet. For all we know it could be an utter disaster.

Posted: 7/13/12 at 6:40pmAh yes but as a concept the production is going to be good since the London production was well received

A cast recording is far more likely than a commercial taping. And the cast recording will probably only happen if a transfer occurs.
But honestly, any discussion of the future plans for this production is too soon at this point. Transfers, recordings, tours, whatever the hell. Let the damn show open first.

COMPANY is a bad argument, since the recent revival was released onto DVD within the past 5 years, and now the newest concert is coming to DVD, too.
Who would want to put up the money for filming and distributing this? I certainly wouldn't. The original production is perfectly captured on DVD and the London production of this transfer can be purchased online. Most of the audience that would buy this on DVD probably already owns it.

Posted: 7/13/12 at 10:15pmThere also isn't a precedent for Delacorte productions being taped other than for archival purposes. I'm sure it's feasible, but I cannot imagine that is an easy house to get a quality recording in.

Posted: 7/14/12 at 12:35amWas Pirates of Penzance, Delacorte? That's the only one that springs to mind and that was over 30 years back, I think...

Posted: 7/15/12 at 11:06amAmy Adams might possibly have a no filming clause in her contract as she gets big bucks for screen work and this isn't going to pay much.

Posted: 7/15/12 at 6:16pmI think PIRATES transferred to a Broadway house and the filmed adaptation was not a direct transfer of the stage performance.
