Wonderful Town

I saw it recently and loved it but the Hirschfeld was NOT packed and the weekly box office reports are not pleasant reading. Any thoughts on why this terrific show is not doing better with the public?

I also enjoyed the show but I did not think it was terrific except for Donna Murphy. She was great!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I understand that all of Broadway is hurting to some degree--except for Wicked and maybe a couple of others.

While I know that there are some that did not like WT, I would say that 90% or more of the audience LOVES it. And, the folks in the mezz (the orchestra is almost always full) do ask the same question when they see more than a handful of empty seats.

Let's hope the Tonys bring more people out to Broadway.

This show was so much fun! I also can't understand why this show isn't doing well. Hopefully a Tony or two may turn around the house numbers.

I completely agree. I thought Wonderful Town was an amazing show. It was so much fun! I guess the show or Donna Murphy aren't as well known as we all thought. But I think the Tonys may help them a little.

I love Wonderful Town and went twice. Donna was fantastic but so was the entire cast.

I loved it too both times I saw it and I keep telling people to go see it, but the house wasn't empty either time I went. Plus theres some great discounts out there that can get you still in the 2nd or 3rd row.

I was going to see it, but I wasn't sure of how it was going to be.

Now I'm definitely adding it to my "List of Shows to See Over the Long, Exceedingly Sweltering, and Insanely Boring Summer." Hopefully WT and the other shows will change it to the "Long, Exceedingly Sweltering, Not-So-Boring Summer."

It might be be because Donna has a reputation for missing a lot of shows. Maybe folkls are afraid to buy tickets in advance. Michael Reidel of the NY Post seems devoted to attacking her for her attendance record. He did the same thing to Bernadette peters a year ago.

Wonderful Town's attendance puzzles me, as well. It got all-around good reviews, and it's a sweet family-friendly kind of show, isn't it? I tend to think it just got lost in the shuffle of all the "louder," more hyped shows- Wicked, The Boy From Oz, Taboo, etc. It doesn't have the Oz connection or Rosie or Jackman or even puppets, so its only "hook" is Donna Murphy, who isn't that well-known outside Broadway. A shame, really.

This is really the show I wanna see when I am going (hopefully!) to New York this summer. Where can you get discounted tickets, because if I could get inexpensive seats I am sure it would be easier to convince my mom to take me. lol

Wonderful Town is probably at the TKTS booth pretty consistently. Or you could try to get rush tickets.

I loved Wonderful Town and I really want to see it win Best Revival, but most likely Assasins will take its place. All together it was a good show- great dancing, swell music (love the cast recording), and a terrific cast lead by the hilarious Donna Murphey. This post has just inspired me to put on the cast recording!

I loved the show, too. I saw it in March and the rear mezzanine was basically empty.

Michael Riedel finds one diva each year to lash out at.
It is his schtick. But both Donna AND Bernadette were great in their roles.
This is coming from someone who adores theater.

Bernadette was not great in the role. She was miscast and had major vocal problems. But I love her. I have found that Mr Reidel has been right about alot of stuff. Still; I wonder if it needs to be reported so viciously.

I admit, Riedel publishes gossip and knowledge before anyone else, which is nice, but the viciousness is totally unncessary. Sadly, he tends to be right about most things, but his success rate isn't perfect, which is reassuring. :)
