I recall that Ben Brantley was in a state of ecstasy (and I don't mean the drug) when he wrote his review.
He was also very enthusiastic about Shields' performance.

I think some of us are forgetting the enthusiasm and genuine surprise regarding Shields' Ruth. She revitalized the production and finally proved that she had the chops to be taken seriously on Broadway. There was also a ton of talk about the replacement Tony.

Are people really underplaying Shields' addition to the cast? I just think people are pointing out that Donna Murphy was a revelation (and even the whole reason the show was transferred, given the all out raves she got at Encores!) and that the original reception of the show was largely based on her performance. No one thought Murphy could do justice to the role, she was known for more intense roles like Fosca and Anna, this was a completely unexpected and insanely brilliant turn she gave. That can't be denied.
I never said people are underplaying Shields' performance. But this thread was about the production/revival in general, therefore I was just expecting to see more mentions of Shields' fabulous performance.
Look at Eileen, all sad about the indecision concerning her suitors. Who will she pick?
Don Draper!

I remember him picking her up at the stage door after the show a few times, it was absolutely adorable.... No one knew who he was then, but I remember thinking how insanely hot he was.
