"Initial casting has been announced for the new musical Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark.
Evan Rachel Wood will play Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker's girlfriend, and Tony winner Alan Cumming stars as Norman Osborn (aka Green Goblin), Spider-Man's most notorious nemesis.
Directed by The Lion King's Julie Taymor, Spider-Man will begin previews at Broadway's Hilton Theatre Jan. 16, 2010, with an official opening scheduled for Feb. 25, 2010. Casting will be announced shortly."

Posted: 6/26/09 at 3:31pmI am not a fan of Evan Rachel Wood's "acting", and truly wonder if she can vocally handle the 8 shows a week schedule.

Again, gotta say. I'm skeptical of the show...but Alan Cumming is PERFECT casting for this role.

Posted: 6/26/09 at 3:47pmAlan Cumming as the villian? This has definitely got my attention! Although, I'm most interested in finding out who will play Peter Parker and Harry.

Previews were indeed pushed back and they still haven't announced an opening night. I actually think I'm going to wait to buy tickets when previews have actually started since I have the feeling they might push previews back again as well.
I must say that I'm at least intrigued.

Posted: 6/26/09 at 5:18pmConsidering there are three villains and they're retelling the whole origin story (which is very much Peter's personal journey), I wouldn't be surprised if both of these characters only get a song or two each.

#13re: Wood and Cumming Cast in SPIDER-MAN
Posted: 6/26/09 at 5:23pmWood has been attached to this project from the get-go so I imagine that Bono has written Mary Jane's numbers around Wood's limitations as well as her talents. I'd be more concerned about how she handles herself on stage but she's doing (or did) ROMEO & JULIET and I imagine she has previous stage experience.

Posted: 6/26/09 at 5:27pmHow long is this show going to be? Will it be like the Norman Conquests?

Posted: 6/26/09 at 5:32pmMy heart skipped a beat 'cause I thought for a second Cumming was going to play Spider-Man.

Posted: 6/26/09 at 5:37pmI got an inward chuckle from seeing "Wood" and "Cumming" in the same subject line, but aside from that ... Alan Cumming as a villain? I'll go.

Tell that to Jerry Herman, Charles Strouse, Jule Styne, Jerry Bock, Stephen Sondheim, Marc Shaiman...

I assume the reference is "just because attached performers aren't much cop at singing doesn't mean the composers are going to turn in crappy tunes".

Posted: 6/26/09 at 6:19pmI think there are a lot more then three villians in this show. There are some new ones added which is basically Julie peeing on the Spiderman material.
