Worst Best Musical?
re: Worst Best Musical?#50
Posted: 11/7/05 at 12:19amComparatively I agree that Ragtime should've trumped The Lion King, but the latter isn't undeserving of the Best Musical award... as you said about Millie, there's no way that it's the worst pick for Best Musical.
re: Worst Best Musical?#51
Posted: 11/7/05 at 12:29amI have to say...The Music Man and How to Succeed. I can't stand either of them. (Waits for the first person to start to attack)

I won't attack you, but along with MY FAIR LADY, THE MUSIC MAN and HOW TO SUCCEED... are my favorite stage musicals! And, if you think they're bad, I shudder to think what you find good!
re: Worst Best Musical?#53
Posted: 11/7/05 at 12:38amI guess I'm the only one who couldn't stand Will Rogers Follies. I'm still disgusted by its win over Once on This Island, Secret Garden and Miss Saigon. Any of those three musicals would have been a far more deserving recipient.

My intention wasn't to be snarky, so I apologize if I came off that way. But...
If you're basing it on the book and/or the score (cast recording), then you should title this thread "Worst Best Book and/or Score" not "Worst Best Musical". If you never saw the production, you have no clue what you're talking about in terms of Best (production of a) Musical.

My vote is going to have to be Spamalot. Of course, this is only because I don't know some of the older "worst best musicals" too well.

oh man...I loved Will Rogers and was thrilled when it won over Secret Garden!
I was disgusted when Titanic won...and yes...I saw the show.
re: Worst Best Musical?#58
Posted: 11/7/05 at 1:15amI wasn't disgusted when TITANIC won...it was the best thing that year by a longshot.

Eh, I didn't think Will Roger's Follies was atrocious, but SECRET GARDEN...How fabulous is this show, it's gorgeous in every way!
...In terms of Titanic the Musical, it definitely wasn't the "worst" best musical, there have been some bad ones and would have to say that in my book, Fosse took the cake! The show was fun to watch, but just a review of the works of a brilliant choreographer...I did enjoy it though! I don't know, Fosse and Contact were a tad on the annoying side to me, lol, Fosse obviously being more enjoyable!

Posted: 11/7/05 at 1:24amStryker, my favorite musicals are Light in the Piazza, Ragtime, and The Secret Garden, among others. I just happen to dislikee The Music Man and How to Succeed in Business without really Trying, I find them uninteresting and fluffy. But that's just my opinion.

Sorry about the double post.
I just wanted to say to JoMarch that I would like to join you, it's just that I don't know Will Rogers Follies well enough.

Posted: 11/7/05 at 1:28amMunk, was Titanic the same year as Steel Pier? I can't remember if it's the same year or not, but I liked that better than Titanic!

Based on book and score, I still think West Side Story should have won over The Music Man. I'm not a huge fan of The Music Man, although it was a really fun show to be in (I played one of the members of the barbershop quartet).

Posted: 11/7/05 at 1:36amSteel Pier was a monotonous bore to me when I saw it -- Debra Monk was the only thing that kept me awake. Personally I'd have voted for THE LIFE that year, just for the Cy Coleman score and Lillias White and Chuck Cooper. Not a banner year for musicals, though.
re: Worst Best Musical?#65
Posted: 11/7/05 at 1:36amExactly. I feel that should have won as well, MrMusic.

One that hasn't been mentioned very many times
Avenue q
I don't hate the show. And I am not saying Wicked should have won, though Im not a Wicked hater. I'm just saying I wish something else had won-although I am not sure what would have been better...

I thought AVENUE Q was cute and fun, but, for me, CAROLINE, OR CHANGE was masterpiece.
re: Worst Best Musical?#68
Posted: 11/7/05 at 1:53amIt was an epic that went under-appreciated by the majority and nothing is sadder than seeing a heartwrenching demonstration of art wiped away by financial figures. Especially when it lasted on broadway for less than 4 months

It makes me sad that I don't know Caroline, or Change too well.
It'll be my next mission in life, I promise...

Thank you Margo, you reminded me of "The Life" from that same year...better than both Titanic and Steel Pier. I wasn't a HUGE fan of Pier, but did find it more enjoyable than Titanic.
extraneous side note: When Titanic the movie and show were around, and Titanic specials were rampant, I took my niece and nephew to a circus...Thay had one of those huge inflatable slides with balls at the end for children to play on outside. My friend and I were horrified to see that it was a blow up version of the Titanic ship...sinking. The children would slide down the deck into the balls at the bottom. The sickest thing I ever saw.
re: Worst Best Musical?#71
Posted: 11/7/05 at 1:59amAh yes, Caroline or Change. That was quite a show! Thanks for reminding me, Margo@

I wish Caroline, or Change was still around, maybe even just a touring production...I love it so much more than Avenue Q and Wicked combined.
::edit:: God, you have to wonder what the world's coming to when you see something like that, justme2. Oh well, let the madness begin.
