munkustrap178, the Best Musical award is for the production, not for the show, so you don't have any clue what the original production of BIG RIVER was like because you probably weren't even born yet when it premiered on Broadway.

Spamalot. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels deserved that Tony more.

Of all time? My guess, based on cast recordings, would be Hallelujah Baby or The Pajama Game.

The original production of "Big River" was thrilling and beautifully performed, designed and directed. True, it opened in an abysmal season, but it is a good show deserving of its win.

Of the more recent winners, my vote for the worst Best Musical would have to be "Thoroughly Modern Millie", in spite of Sutton Foster's wonderful performance.

Foster: No need to be snarky!

What I really meant with this post, I suppose, was really just based on source material. Sit down, read the script, listen to the score - NO production aspects included.

Hey, munk---I know I snarled a bit at you too over Big River. If you're not into the book or the music, so be it.

But it was an inspiring musical to see on Broadway during its original run, with terrific direction, staging, lighting, etc. The acting was great, and the cast "got" the irony of the lyrics and had the overall sardonic tone of Mark Twain down to a T. The darkness came through a few times too. It really was a layered and complex show.

I doubt the various posters about PAJAMA GAME or HALLELUJAH BABY saw the OBCs of those, either. (Well... did they?) But they pipe up about their unjust wins just the same. I suppose it can be based on book and score alone. If you can't get past those, then why bother, right?

But I'm here to tell you, Big River rocked... once upon a time.

Big River (OBC ) was such a thrilling show, my first ever visit to New York.

The night i saw it, it was near perfect.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I saw the original productions of all the shows I listed except for:

1) APPLAUSE, but I have the tv film version with Bacall and Penny Fuller and other members of the original cast -- dreadful; and

2) I saw the production of HALLELUJAH BABY that Arthur Laurents himself staged at Arena Stage last year in which he made major revisions to his always problematic book. It's STILL AWFUL. The score has a few moments and he was hoping it would move to Broadway -- never happen unless the book is tossed out completely and someone other than Laurents writes a new one.

PS I like PAJAMA GAME -- there are a dozen worse shows than that that have won Best Musical

And keep in mind - when I say worst best musical - I don't necessarily mean that their win was unjustified - maybe it WAS the best thing that year.

However, I'm merely compiling a list a shows that won the coveted award, but were not quite brilliant.

I'm truly shocked that anyone (much less several) would list Pajama Game.

My choices based mainly, although not exclusively, on cast albums are: Hallelujah, Baby; Applause; The Wiz; Cats; Sunset Boulevard; Thoroughly Modern Millie.

THE PAJAMA GAME - while hardly a bad show - is definitely one of the lesser best-musicals.

It reminds me that just because something is old doesn't mean it's necessarily good - something that a lot of people on the boards (and in general) have a hard time grasping.

The question is whether you mean the worst musicals out of all the musicals that have won best musical or the one that least deserved the title of Best Musical in the year in which it was awarded it. I'd say Spamalot and Millie didn't deserve the title due to their competition, but that doesn't mean they're the worst shows that have won (I haven't seen enough of the old ones to know).

Without a doubt, SPAMALOT.

Millie was wonderful.

Why does everyone hate Spamalot? Granted, I don't think it really should've been Best Musical (my vote would've gone to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), but I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Well worth my money.

I say Titanic.

Good point, Liz. Two Gentlemen of Verona is not one of the worst shows to win the Tony, but it should never have won out over Follies.

I might even say The Lion King since I think Ragtime is better on ALL levels.
