Worst Best Musical?

Inspired from a previous thread where one poster claimed that a show couldn't be bad if it won Best Musical, I bring you this.

What do you think is the worst best musical ever?

Allow me to nominated what I consider the worst winners to be:

THE PAJAMA GAME
BIG RIVER
SUNSET BOULEVARD
THE PRODUCERS
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
SPAMALOT

If I had to choose one, it would probably be MILLIE.

re: Worst Best Musical?

Some of those on your list are pretty fantastic shows. Did you even see the original Big River????

I vote for "Titanic," above all, that won the coveted prize.

I'll agree with MILLIE, munk.

URINETOWN was leaps and bounds better.

re: Worst Best Musical?

I did not see the original BIG RIVER - it's the only show I almost didn't include on my list - but it's not really BEST MUSICAL material, if you ask me. I was in the show - am very familiar with it, and saw the revival - which I adored - but I still don't think it's a great musical - it's the source material that I love.

Some pretty fantastic shows? Feel free to point them out.

Contact should be nominated. I was p/o'd when it won.

Although CONTACT might not fit under the musical category, I thought it was positively amazing.

re: Worst Best Musical?

I saw the original "Big River" 2 1/2 times. Okay, yes, that means I second-acted it once. Guilty, as charged. re: Worst Best Musical?

I had a friend take over the role of Mary Jane Wilkes in it, so several of us went to see it a few times and wish her well. I 'fessed up about this on other postings, but it was Marin Mazzie making her Broadway debut. We had just worked together a month before she got this part. The show holds a special place in my heart, as we had all just moved to New York. But I thought it was a damn fine musical all around. Still do. And the entire cast was terrific.

re: Worst Best Musical?

Susnet Boulevard would probably have not won in any other year -- if it had some actual competition.

I would say both Fosse and Contact were ridiculous choices for "best musical," regardless of the artistic merit of either show.

re: Worst Best Musical?

I'd hardly call THE PRODUCERS the worst Best Musical.

I vote for TITANIC.

SUNSET BOULEVARD
SPAMALOT

re: Worst Best Musical?

I agree SB is not the best musical ever, although is my favorite but I definately think that even with "actually real competition" would be a big contender in any other year.

In my opinion, Avenue Q is very funny but not a best musical deserver, if that term exists jeje

Hallelujah, Baby!

I borrowed the cast recording from the local library a couple of weeks bad and I despise it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it opened during a very weak season.

re: Worst Best Musical?

What about "Jerome Robbin's Broadway". Not that the songs where bad, but it wasn't an musical as more a revue and really 1989 was pretty much the worst year on record for new material.

re: Worst Best Musical?

JEROME ROBBINS' BROADWAY was a revue, but it was an utterly brilliant and thrilling one (several revues have won Best Musical incidentally). A whole evening of showstoppers. FAR from the worst Best Musical.

Without a doubt, Thoroughly Modern Millie.

re: Worst Best Musical?

Honestly, the second I saw this I thought Hairspray. But, on second thought, I would say Contact.

re: Worst Best Musical?

I LOVE Big River, I cant believe you'd say that. Maybe I'm just partial because I've been in a regional production.

THE PRODUCERS is also a great show.

I think PAJAMA GAME wins this one. It's so cheesey, and the music, from what I remember was rather un-memeorable.
