Melina Karakaredes was DAMN good in Cabaret....my personal all time favorite was Gina Gershon, but Melina did a very nice job. It was her emcee of John Secada that GAWD AWFUL! What he did to I DONT CARE MUCH was one of the worst pieces of theatrical entertainment I have EVER seen!
Raquel Welch - Victor/Victoria
Mark Hamill - Amadeus
Loraine Newman - Fifth of July
Robert Goulet - La Cage
Susan Lucci - Annie Gret Your Gun
Brooke Sheilds - Cabaret

Awww, I loved Faith as Anna!
I know she wasn't a replacement (except for the Merm) but TYNE DALY in GYPSY!!!

Brooke Shields - Wonderful Town
^ What??
I can see saying Brooke for Cabaret. But she was fantastic in WT. Too get Brantley and all the other critics rave about you - that sure says something.

I preferred Donna Murphy in the role. And in my life I have seen a few replacements but Liza and Brooke I thought were the weakest.
I like Brooke Shields, so I feel bad that I put her on the list, but I don't think she was right for the role.

And she did do a good job if you've never seen the show before. But if you have seen the show, like I have, she just didn't do it for me.
and i thought tyne in GYPSY was one of the most exciting performances i have ever seen (not much of a singer necessarily--but her ROSES TURN was shocking--almost pornographic in how coarse she was, how un-selfconscious)
i think faith has good qualities for mrs. anna but her voice was just all wrong for that lyrical music (imo)
--but i'm having an i hate everyone day so don't go by me...
Now I really want to see Tyne's ROSES TURN. It sounds quite interesting.
If you enjoy method acting while listening to a fog horn . . . in a bad wig . . .
EDIT: and "coarse" and "pornographic" might be appropriate descriptions, but I don't think that's necessarily a good thing.

My top two are Hasselhoff in Jekyll and Hyde, and Jon Secada in Cabaret. Elch.
i thought tyne was fascinating as Rose, and she had great rapport with jonathon hadary. she also put the weisslers in their place which is worth an award in my book. i will take one raw moment from tyne than the entire bloodless, cutesie-poo production we were treated to 2 years back.
These are all London casts, hope you guys don't mind:
Chicago - Frances Ruffelle and Brooke Shields as Roxie
Les Miserables - Sean Kingsley as JVJ
Phantom Of The Opera - Oliver Thornton
Linzi Hately - Roxie
Ruthie Henshall - Velma
^ Just playin' with ya!
Garland Grrrl -- I agree that Bernadette wasn't appropriate for Rose, either. She worked to hard to try to be overbearing. It even comes through in the CR. Tyne was overbearing. I just have this thing against people who can't sing starring in musicals on b-way. Plus, I've never liked Tyne's acting style -- not on TV, not in movies, and DEFINITELY not on stage. You can see her working her acting technique, and a good actress just "IS" the character. I loved everything about that production of Gypsy except for Tyne.
