I'm no big Cats fan but I think the songs can, in their way, be kinda charming for ALW. Not that I ever ever wanna see it again.
Frontrowcenter, not to pick on you friend, but you complain about Sunset Blvd and then praise Applause for its source... But I think SB at the least does better by its original movie than Applause which kinda misses half the point of All About Eve with some of the changes made. I know I'm gonna get crucified for this but Avenue Q. I didnt find anything THAT great about it except the shock value of seeing some muppet knock offs to be singing about sex and porn.
Also, although I like "Billy Elliot" I still think Next to Normal should have won

^ I disagree with pretty much everything there... Avenue Q is way more than a muppets knock off. It has a great score and brilliant book, and it is a completely different type of Broadway show. It is truly an original musical, and deserved every Tony it recieved. There wasn't anything else that season that deserved to win anyways IMO. I know a lot of people think Next to Normal should have won, but I am definitely in the group that prefers Billy Elliot.

Bwayphreak, you and I have SUCH different opinions haha. I personally think WICKED should have won only because I think its the superior show but obviously we REALLY disagree there :P I just found WICKED much more appealing and effected me in many ways which still have lasting impressions. Avenue Q was a fun night out at the theater but nothing more to me. Which is NOT bad, but IMO it was not Tony worthy. But again, thats the brilliance of theater...different tastes in shows that still brings us all to the same conclusion, we leave the theater happy :)

Memphis... just how did they win? Next to Normal is one of my most favorite musicals (obviously), but I understand that Billy Elliot was an easier sell.
For those who thought NEXT TO NORMAL wouldn't have a life outside Broadway, well it's now playing in 4 cities, 9 different countries and has been translated into 6 languages.
Clearly I think Titanic. I don't even think it should have been nominated. I think Jekyll & Hyde was better. I think score should have gone to Steel Pier ( unpopular opinion but I don't like Titanic's score) and book to The Life. I think Steel Pier should have won Best Musical (clearly) based on the fact it got the best reviews.
I didn't have to think long - TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA. One of my least favorite shows ever; I regreted buying a ticket. And the only reason I did was because it won a Tony Award.
And to think that it beat FOLLIES!!!! What were they thinking?

I agree about Contact. I thought the husband/wife one was clever -- for about the first 5 minutes, then it became tedious and repetitive to the point I wanted to scream. The last one, seemed like it would make a good 10 minute skit -- but it went on and on and on. The first one I liked the best. But best MUSICAL? A dance recital put to recorded instrumental music? Come on!
At least one thing you can say. There wasn't a BAD lyric in a single number of Contact.
Memphis (just didn't like it at all) or Contact (In my opinion, if they use all pre-recorded music with people dancing to it, it's not a musical-at least the Twyla Tharp shows include live music.)
It opened the same year as Spamalot (a show I love but I understand the love for Spelling Bee and Piazza).
Memphis won in a rather poor year. The Lion King, a dumb-downed adaptation of great animated film, was against Ragtime and The Scarlet Pimpernel. That's my pick.
Of all the seasons I've witnessed, I'd have to say Fosse. As much as I love his choreography, I found the the show itself to be rather uninspired and bland. I honestly felt like it won simply for being a tribute to Fosse. I know Ann Reinking has a thing for black, and it worked for Chicago because there is a story to follow, but I found it so monotonous in Fosse. The tempos for most of the upbeat numbers were slowed and those orchestrations... How on earth did it win a Tony for orchestrations?!?! Now, I understand why people get all snarky about Contact because it was not a "musical" and it did not feature live music, but I found it infinitely more creative and deserving than Fosse.
Other winners I may not personally feel were the BEST show of the season (Millie, Crazy For You, The Producers, Spring Awakening, Jersey Boys, Phantom of the Opera, Kiss of the Spider Woman) but I understood they were strong enough to pull the votes for the prize. Fosse, on the other hand, no way.

I've never seen Two Gentlemen due to not being alive yet, but I adore the recording think the script is funny. Iwould love to see a fun, little revival at one of Broadway's smaller theatres. Maybe Douglas Carter Bean can retool it a lil bit.
After seeing Two Gentlemen of Verona at the Delacorte, it quickly became one of my all-time favorite musical productions I've seen in NYC. I've never been much of a fan of Follies, so I don't have a problem with the Two Gents win for Best Musical. I just wish the Delacorte production had transferred to Broadway (with some minor tweaking). The show was ripe for revival, especially during the Bush administration.

gypsy4, I preferred Amour because of the score and performances, but I don't think Hairspray is a bad show at all. I actually liked all the nominees that year. I think it just came down to voter preference because the nominated shows were all so different and worthwhile in their own ways.
based on the productions I saw it would have to be...Titanic. I would have left during intermission if my friends weren't enjoying it. I'm still not sure if they liked it or were enjoying laughing at it. As weird as it is...I did like some of the songs. It was a talented cast too.
