Posted: 5/21/10 at 10:03pmIt might depend on how much they change the score and book. If most of it is new or re-written, it might be elligible. Mermaid was.

Posted: 5/21/10 at 10:08pmBut Mermaid hadn't been produced as a stage production before. HEDWIG had a successful long running off Broadway production and has been doing extensively regionally. Its pedigree is actually almost exactly that of LITTLE SHOP / ASSASSINS - it would definitely be revival not original.

Posted: 5/21/10 at 10:29pmI think Husk was referring to Mermaid's score being eligible due to the amount of it that was new and not from the movie.

Posted: 5/21/10 at 10:36pmI don't really know what you can add or even take away from Hedwig's score. The fans are expecting Origin of Love, Tear Me Down, Angry Inch, Sugar Daddy, Wig In A Box, etc.

50 percent or more of the score must be new.
If they significantly revise the book, they might be able to petition to be considered. Doubtful, though.
And it would definitely be a revival. It has had a healthy regional and international life. And it's a movie, too.
They're better off in the revival category, anyways, from the way the miserable revival list is shaping up (How to Succeed, Molly Brown, Anything Goes).

Yes, it will be considered a revival. Hello, Golden Globe-nominated movie based on a cult Off-Broadway show? I say if Michael Cerveris played the role, it will be considered a revival. And unless there's a complete revision of the book, it won't be eligible. The thing I want to know is whether John Cameron Mitchell will be eligible for his performance since he did originate the role and since this production will be deemed a revival.

Mildred-
Don't get too harsh on the revivals yet. They have one cast member "confirmed" for each. Let's let them get a little more underway.

Posted: 5/22/10 at 10:30amIf the show is the complete reimagining it has been rumored to be, based as much on the expanded "movie universe" of Hedwig as on the one-man-show version, it MAY have a shot on new musical, but that's hard to say.

Best Revival. Regardless of how much they changed it. As the OP said, it's the same deal with LSOH.
Can someone please telling me where they're getting this magical Hedwig info from? I haven't seen links to any articles, anything.

Has there ever been a precedent for what would happen if the show is indeed completely redone to be more like the film? If there's substantial revision, I'd argue they could petition and win for new musical status. It would become a musical adapted from a musical in a sense.
Otherwise, it would be a revival--only a shame that the brilliant book/score would be denied Tony nominations.

Posted: 5/22/10 at 7:21pmI wonder how much of the show will actually change to be more like the movie. Jonathan Groff as Tommy? Andrea Martin reprising Phyllis Stein?

I don't know if you saw him, but Cerveris was incredible in the role. Would love to see him in it again, but I doubt it'll ever happen.

I have not seen him in the role, but I can only imagine that he was nothing short of brilliant.
