Posted: 3/24/07 at 4:22pmWho thinks Victoria Clark would be an excellent Nellie in the revival of South Pacific. I think she would also be a great cast in Hello Dolly if there will be a revival soon. Does anyone know what Victoria Clark is planning next?

I actually don't think she is the right choice for Nellie Forbush, I just really can't see her in it.
I know Scarlett Johansson is their top choice, but I think Kelli O'Hara would actually be a great choice.

Clark probably would have been a good Nellie 10-15 years ago, but now, at 40-something is a bit too old to convincingly play a rather naive, unwordly, wide-eyed "cock-eyed optimist" like Nellie, who ideally should be played by an actress in her 20s or early 30s (the role was created for 35-year old Mary Martin, who was so plucky, earnest and vivacious that she came across much younger).

Thes, this argument has been had and had and had and had.
She's TOO OLD. A fool could see that.
I'm pulling for Scarlett Johansson, but I know Kelli O'Hara would bee fine.

Posted: 3/24/07 at 4:56pmI adore Vicki, but she's 20 years too old for Nellie.

Posted: 3/24/07 at 5:14pmShe would be great in a concert staging, where age doesn't matter (look at Reba), but not for a full production. I doubt that Scarlett Johansson's casting will come through; given that it's Bart Sher, look for Kelli O'Hara.

It would work if Emile was 70 years old.

Well, here's a picture of the man they're apparently pursuing: Dmitri Hvorostovsky, who's only 43 but is already grey. He's a ridiculously talented opera singer, and I would love to see him take on Emile.

Victoria Clark would be perfectly cast in SOUTH PACIFIC...as Bali Hai. Lord knows, she's old enough to play the part.

I think Kelli would be a wonderful choice!
I also think that Erin Dilly would be a great Nellie as well as she was wonderful on tour!
Did anyone catch Erin on the tour? She certainly had the spunk and feistyness of Nellie!

She would work well, and although at many community theatre's Actresses her age and older will play Nellie, I don't see it happening on Broadway. She looks too old too.
She just played Sally in Follies! and those roles are all about being middle-aged (or older!), so stepping into something into a role where the character is almost a college student seems unlikely.
However, since so many were upset that Kerri Butler was declared too old for Ariel, I don't see her being too old for Nellie :)

Posted: 3/24/07 at 11:37pmI'm suprised no one mentioned how old Glenn Close was for the part, and how miscast she was.

MTVMANN,
I was just going to ask if anyone else thought Kerri Butler would make a good Nellie. I think she has the look, the spunk, the perkiness that's needed.

Oh Glenn Close! That was really my first exposure to South Pacific and even then I thought that she looked a bit too old.
I mean, Didn't She have grey hair in that movie? Come on!

Posted: 3/25/07 at 7:59pmSorry, love her but she is far too old for the role of Nellie as was Glenn Close. Kelli O'Hara is much more logical.

I would love to see Kelli...
Does anyone think Lauren Kennedy would be considered? I know she did the role in London, and I'm pretty sure I read good things about her Nellie?
And since Scarlett has been considered for the Sound of Music and this... I'm guessing she can sing pretty well... but is there any proof?

I'd like to see Patti Lupone as Nellie and Tommy Tune as Emile. Harvey Fierstein or Lea DeLaria would be great as Bloody Mary, with Savion Glover as Lt. Cable
