Yankee's Tony Winner Predictions, Updated

Agreed about the commercial factor of IN THE HEIGHTS.
Oscars often go to the most artsy fartsy movies (perhaps without the widest reaching audience) but Tonys rarely do. It's kinda sad for the PASSING STRANGE folks, but I highly doubt they will take the Best Musical prize despite all the uniform praise.
The GLORY DAYS factor is probably a non factor at the end of the day given the fact that they are basically shipping it in directly from DC with very few changes (and except for the Washington Post every other media review uniformly said "has potential needs work." (sic) However Glory Days STARTS "rehearsal" next Monday, Techs Fri-Sun or Mon and then previews. YIKES! So much for those changes (although I'm told that they will happen in previews-all 10 days of them).
We'll see.

I really don't understand people who are saying that this was "such a weak year" for new musicals... 8 new musicals opened or will open this season. That's a lot. And both Xanadu and Passing Strange received out-and-out raves from the major critics. In the Heighs received VERY positive notices. And who's to say, at this point, what the critics/voters will think of A Catered Affair, Cry-Baby, and Glory Days?

This year is definitely NOT weak.

I would be incredibly disappointed if Passing Strange were to win anything (I wouldn't even nominate it in any categories). I think In the Heights will win best musical, best score, best actor, and best supporting actor (Robin DeJesus). and choreography, of course. Douglas Carter Beane's witty book will win Xanadu it's only tony.

I think Deana Dunagan will win, not Amy Morton (but it depends on the rulings about Eve Best and esp. Kate Fleetwood).

Mark Rylance is def. a lead not a featured actor.

I'm not sure about Patrick Stewart; Kate Fleetwood is the standout in Macbeth.

If it were up to me alone, Passing Strange would be shut out in all categories. Of course, it will be nominated in lots of categories, but I'm predicting it won't win in any as this is a year of 3 great revivals.

^Eve Best has already been ruled Leading.

I don't understand those who are saying this is a weak year for new musicals, either. Would any of those people care to elaborate?

I think it's great that you're getting ready to be disappointed.

I agree with everything you said....but

BEST MUSICAL- IN THE HEIGHTS

* you know ... I am rooting for PASSING STRANGE too.. but i truly believe they will give it to IN THE HEIGHTS.

BEST REVIVAL PLAY- I dont know about TOP GIRLS- I has not opened yet...

I love all your predictions.. I really wish ***PASSING STRANGE**** gets the BEST MUSICAL, but I think that's the GREY GARDENS this season.

I'm in the camp that thinks In The Heights will beat Passing Strange for Best Musical. It's just more commercial. Passing Strange hasn't proven that it can find an audience yet. I do hope it gets Best Score, though. The score for In The Heights only flies for me when they incorporate the salsa rhythms.

Both have a lot to recommend, but neither of them are great, which is what people mean when they talk of a weak season.

I think South Pacific will beat Gypsy for Revival, but that LuPone will win Best Actress.

Agree that Douglas Carter Beane's book will give Xanadu it's only win.

I kind of think Tom Wopat might upset Boyd Gaines for featured actor. It's his time and he really is one of the best things about Catered Affair.

I think they're going to spread it around this year because there wasn't one new musical which wowed everybody. If anything, this was the year of the excellent revivals.

Hmmm And can we stop with In the Heights?

I think this year's tonys will prove to provide a few surprises.

Thanks H.Higgins I too hope we are right. The last few years ive been pretty on the money with a few upsets here or there (such as sweeney losing revival and Raul losing to David). Im in the minority that YF is getting design nods and hopefully a featured actor and actress nod for Chris Fitzgerald and then either andrea Martin (the more likly) or Sutton Foster (that my crush speaking lol). I see Lin Manuel Miranda being Bob Martin this year. Get awarded for his writing but awarding someone else for a wonderful performance.

Bobby Maler-
Wopat is up for leading actor, I think. He's the lead. He's above the title

Everyone, just wait for A Catered Affair to open. Just wait...

And while I think Benanti and LuPone are pretty much locks, I think Gaines' win is a bit iffy. He was fantastic, don't get me wrong, (at least he was when I saw the show last summer) but I think he might be this year's Manoel Felciano...all of this buildup and ruckus and then come mid-May, he suddenly loses steam. He will definitely be nominated but I think we're going to have to keep a close eye on the Best Featured Actor in a Musical race...

Unfortunately, that is true about A Catered Affair, although I think it's semi-possible that it could get Best Director.

"Wopat is up for leading actor, I think. He's the lead. He's above the title"

You think? His role is so small. Smaller than Harvey's. I think his name is only above the title because his agent was able to negotiate it and because he is a draw. It will be interesting to see how the Tony committee will fall on this. I guess if Debra Monk was put in the Lead Actress category last year, you may be right...

Interesting question, though: What was the smallest role ever played by someone who was nominated in the Lead Actor/Actress category?

Bobby, all that matters is that they are above the title. Any actor who is above the title is AUTOMATICALLY placed in the Leading category UNLESS the producers petition the Tony Administration Committee for the actor to be placed in Featured.

The size of the role is irrelevant.

If the CATERED AFFAIR producers do no petitioning, Faith, Tom, and Harvey will all automatically be considered for the Leading category.
