I'm happy to have many Hamlets. It's a very rich play with a wide array of possibilities, and it's great to be able to see so many different interpretations in such speedy succession. We get tons of Lears as well (McKellen in 2007, Calder in 2008, Postlethwaite in 2009, Hicks in 2010*, Jacobi in 2011**, Russell Beale in 2012***), I don't see y'all complaining about that. :P
*Okay, Hicks's Lear might not be one of the RSC plays transferring to the Roundhouse, but it's in Stratford alllll summer, guys. ^_^
** I know it starts in 2010, but I just love the thought of "a Lear a year".
*** Although this hasn't been confirmed, right?
The only issues I have with the multitude of Hamlets is 1) I really don't rate Rory Kinnear and hope the rest of the cast make up for him (they're already off to a good start with Ruth Negga and Clare Higgins; hope it's a good technical team too!), and 2) there's not a multitude of other Shakespeare plays
as well.
I mean, I can almost guarantee that if someone changed their minds about doing a
Hamlet, they wouldn't decide to slot in a
Titus Andronicus or
Pericles instead, and that makes me sad. By all means, do your endless
Hamlets! For those of us who want to see it, it's an opportunity to see another production! For those of us who don't want to see it, it's an opportunity to save a bit of ticket money for another play they *do* want to see! But PLEASE don't neglect the rest of the canon; there's still another 7-9 I've not yet seen.
