So, in "You'll See" (RENT, of course), there's this one part where Collins says: I like Boys and Angel says: Boys like me. Now does Angel mean "Boys are attracted to me" or "Boys such as myself"?
I really don't know why this is bothering me so much.
I think it's the former - that's how I took it...but I guess it could be either.
I have always wondered that myself.
I always wanted to mean what you thought it meant. Larson seemed to like being able to look at things differently. Like the snow scene. Snow means so many different things to people depending who you are. So, I thought the ending of you'll see was very intentional.
That's hilarious - it's become a running gag for me and my friend, where I'll ask him that same question every time we hear the song (which used to be quite often...) Glad to know we're not the only ones...
Wow, I never thought of it in the second way but that totally makes sense also. It's funny how once you get the meaning of a lyric in your head you will never think of it any other way until someone points it out...

I never thought of it like the second way. I guess there's no reason it couldn't be that, though.

I've always assumed he meant the double meaning!
I have always interpreted it as meaning that boys like him.
The other way does work though.
either way. I like to think Angel is saying that Collins likes drag-queen boys... boys like him.

I think it's an intentional play on words. And a good one, at that.
Huh. I like that second interpretation. It's even cuter than the first! I never thought of it.
I agree with mebice. I think it was intentionally ambiguous so it could go whatever way the listener wanted.
ugh great now this is going to piss me off forever. I always thought it was the first way.

haha, wow,i never thought about it that way before, huh
Interesting!
Yeah I never really thought about the second possible meaning mentioned but its interesting, the double meanings. I agree with the comment about it being however you, personally, interpret it.

I can't see it as the second simply because of the way it's sung. If it were to mean the second meaning, the word "me" would need to be where the emphasis is (sing "boys like" as eigth notes and "me" as a quarter note, and that puts the emphasis on "me" - that's also how you would speak it if you meant it the second way, with the emphasis on "me"). However, with the rhythm as it is, it's pretty neutral on emphasis, but there's a slight pull towards "like", which is what happens if you say the sentence meaning it the first way.
That said, he probably meant it both ways and I'm just overanalyzing again.
Hah,
Me and my friend just had ths debate a few months ago. Guess we'll never know.

I took it as Tom starting to flirt with Angel. (I like boys (winking at Angel))
Then Angel is flirts back with Tom. (Boys like me (winking at Tom))
I took it as Collins likes boys, boys such as Angel
What's it called "double entendre" or something. However... I always thought Angel was saying that Boys like him... cause he's beautiful. It always struck me as a cute and totally flirty thing. IE.... catch me now Collins... cause I want YOU! :)
it works both ways, although i always took it as "boys are attracted to me".
i took it literally
boys like angel.
I always thought of it as "boy are attracted to me" because of where the emphasis is. It's on "like". If the emphasis were on "me", I would think of it as "boys such as me". Because of the emphasis, the thought that it could be the latter never even crossed my mind.
I think the double meaning is pretty cool, though.
