I was just in NYC on Monday and I saw Leslie and I thought she was excellent. She is an amazing singer and a pretty good actress :)
Sheryl Lee Ralph can't act or sing? Yes she can! At least, in my opinion. She has a big belting voice with a nice vibratto- She may not have the best voice in the world, but I enjoy listening to her. As for her acting, she was hysterical. Leslie misses the whole "You're A Boob" line right before "Gimme Gimme" which is on of the funniest lines she says. And in the scene where she dresses as a modern in the hotel lobby with Mrs. Meers, she is hysterical- and Leslie didn't get one laugh out of me. Sheryl had a tough attitude, which came through in her anger toward Meers. And in my humble opinion- Sheryl has tons and tons of presence on stage- she brings power to the role. Leslie is so weak, and lacks the presence Sheryl brought to the role.
Hi,
I saw only Sheila Ferguson as Muzzy in London..... too bad. I hope I could see Sheryl as Muzzy. She is so gd in the recording! Cheila is OK..... she is VERY funny in the scene she pretended to be a YOUNG girl! we all cracked! I hope I could see TMM on Broadway because it's not that gd and some difference for the London 1.
My Thorughly Modern Millie group!
I'm gonna have to go with Leslie Uggams, even though I really don't like the way she phrases her words in the music, she's a far better actress than Sheryl Lee Ralph. It took a bit of a while for her to grow on me, I must admit, but now that I'm seeing clearly, she beats out Sheryl.
Billy Sheryl HAS no vibrato, haha. That's the only thing that really bugged me about her singing, she does have a nice voice though. And she could hold out that last note in "Only in New York" like nobody's business.

Well, this is a Broadway forum, so you should have known I was not talking about the cartoon! Pamela was funny when she dressed up as a modern, too. I feel that Pamela rushed the whole Green Glass speech and the you're a boob section.
I guess I disagree. Like I said, Leslie's acting was not, in my opinion, up to par with Sheryl's. But I do agree that Sheryl has no vibratto- I don't know why I put that.-lol.
But, anyway- I just felt Sheryl was the better actress, I guess. Leslie, wasn't bad, though. I still enjoyed her performance.
Sorry, for me there really is only one Muzzy, film or onstage...yes Carol Channing. Thoroughly Modern Millie witrhout Jazz Baby just isn't the same. I miss Tapioca too.
SueleenGay I also laughed at the topic heading!
