Forgot to mentioned mine: the Thenadiers.
For the Phantom, depend on your perception.

Javert...is my favorite antagonist.
You can question him as "villain" ... I guess.

Audrey II
P.S. Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett are definetely NOT villains. They do bad deeds, but they aren't evil.

James2, What show did you see? If you're equating villain with antagonist, then you have a point.

Posted: 6/10/05 at 2:34pmThat's what is so great about the characters of Sweeney and Lovett. They are villains and protagonists at the same time.
#21re: Your Favorite Villan
Posted: 6/10/05 at 2:35pmI was using the word villain meaning scoundrel not as someone working against the protagonist. Both of our views are correct depending upon which definition you follow.

I love the "villains" that may not really be villians. Javert was the first that came to mind, you understand his actions even though you don't agree with them. I guess you could say the same about the Phantom, but I love the character way too much to consider him a villian.
I guess my other fav would be villians that aren't simply one person but just dimensional. Though Nazis appear to be the villians in Cabaret, I think it's human nature that really is. Same goes for the Constable in Fiddler or the circumstances that affected the Bui Doi in Miss Saigon.

James2- Mrs. Lovett is DEFIENTLY a villan. In my opinion, she IS the villian of the show! (more so than the judge) It is revealed at the end that she lied to Sweeney about his wife. And she pays for it, by having the worst death in the show. She is evil! (love her dearly though)
Sweeney on the other hand is DEFIENTLY not a villan.

"Villain."
Jud Fry in Oklahoma! I wouldn't really call any of the characters in Sweeney Todd, but that's just my perception/definition/whatnot. Oh, and the Thenardiers.
