the wild party (lachiusa)
ragtime
carousel
parade
company (the broadway revival, which i think is a better CD to listen to, though not a better show)
Pippin's Cast Recording sounds weak - i dont know if this is the OBC or the revival i am thinking of. The chorus numbers also are weak, they are so awesome when sung w/ power.
I'll have to go with Ragtime, Parade, Into The Woods, Passion, and Carousel. Those would be my top 5. I also really enjoy the revival recording of Kiss Me Kate.
Okay, besides RENT, I say A Chorus Line, Into the Woods, Jekyll and Hyde, Big River, and Evita.
Ragtime is by far my favorite OBC. The music is very well done, and I think is the shows strongest point. I have been listening to Seussical quite a bit and while the subject matter doesn't seem that important, Dr. Seuss actually adressed many societal issues through his books. I love Les Mis but ever since I did tech for a production of it, listening to the cd just doesn't cut it anymore. This isn't an OBC just a demo recording, but I love the Demonstration Cd of A Tale of Two Cities, It's very well done and the orchestrations are beautiful. I love th music of Pippin but the OBC is not very good in my humble opinion. I have been enjoying Sweeney Todd quite a bit lately, I especially love the Johanna sung by the judge for some reason. I think because its so dark, and you don't see that very often. I love them all!!!!!! Haha. Music is so powerful, I just love it. There are a few songs I guess I don't like but I am very open minded so it takes a lot for me notto like someting. I guess it is all how effective the song/cast reacording is and how much I connect with it.

Gunn, you especially like Judge Turpin's Johanna? *shudders* That song is...strong, all right.
I actually have an irrational attachment to Sarah Rice's lovely Green Finch and Linnet Bird.
I like the Once Upon a Mattress OBC. I love the fact that right before Happily Ever After you hear Carol and Director having a conversation about how she's singing the song.
I also like Wicked,Rent,Avenue Q, and Hairspray albums (yes all contemporary B-way).
The Titanic OBC...was rather, uh, dull?

Plum, I love Green Finch 2.
So, should add Sweeney Todd.
Aw.. Shucks All Sondheim shows but Passions & Assassins. I know i'm going to get flack about those, but just not my cup of tea. :)
Fantasticks (Japan recording was awful)
Urinetown
London Les Mis (not obc...)
I have to also agree with you, Chenofano. The London CHICAGO out does the revival CD in every way. It's more energetic and the cast (all of them) shoot the original revival cast off the stage. (pun intended.) Not only does it have the act one finale, but it also has Roxie's Soliloquy prior to the song "Roxie" and all the dialogue that takes place during the numbers. And Ruthie and Uta together is pure sin! The only thing it doesn't have verses the revival CD is the 'I Can't Do It Alone' reprise, technically it could have been included, but the running time was, I guess, way to close to 80 minutes. The actual OBC, other than being a historical reference, really does nothing for me.....
ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY — one of the best scores of the 1970s.
SWEENEY TODD — The best score ever written.
RAGTIME — Truly amazing.
URINETOWN — Truly delightful.
THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS — Not your traditional Broadway score, but a toe-tapping good time nonetheless.
A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC — Sondheim's music is beautiful.

How did I forget Cats?!
Because the OBC of CATS sucks. My pick would have to be the Australian cast recording, because it is the only one (in English) that includes "The Awful Battle of the Peekes and the Pllicles". Plus is uses the final evolved version of "Mungojerrie and Rumplezeazer". But the French cast recording also includes the Mistoffelees dance music, so it's hard to pick. But the OBC would not be my first choice.
do they HAVE to be OBCs? my favorites are...
any of the Sondheim OBDs
Show Boat - 1988 Studio Cast
Ragtime - OBC
Tommy - 1992 Cast
Kiss of the Spider Woman - OBC
Sunset Boulevard - OLC
Jesus Christ, Superstar - OBC
among others...

Well, if it doesn't just have to be OBCs, add in a few for me:
1998 London Oklahoma!
1999 You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown
Falsettoland (OOBC)
Hey, technically the '99 Charlie Brown is an Original Broadway Cast recording. The show had never actually played in a Broadway house before and the first CD was the off-Broadway cast so the '99 is the OBC. ![]()
and I also love the 1998 London Oklahoma! the booklet with all the pictures is great....

I would say Wicked too because I love the show, but I don't really like the way the recording was done, like how they butchered (by this I mean shortened) Defying Gravity (Idina's "IT'S MMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! will never be heard once the show closes). The recording itself sounds like they tried too hard to make it a pop crossover. Personal opinion. Take it or leave it.

Chicago- The original cast is 100 times better than the revival (although Bebe Neuwirth did give a great performance, everything else was just horrible on that recording). The recent recording of the London cast is slightly better though because of Ruthie Henshall (best Roxie ever), the energenic orchestra and the completness of it.
The Producers- This is one of the best cast recordings ever of one of the best musicals ever. The performances, the songs, and the comedy come together perfectly on this cd.
Hello, Dolly!- The movie always turned me away from this musical, but when I got a chance to listen to the original cast I changed my mind right away. Even though Carol Channing is not really a great singer, there's something about her that makes me like her in the role of Dolly. The score is also fun and bouncy; Jerry Hermen's best.
Sweeney Todd- I've always thought of Angela Lansbury like a great-aunt (It was because she played Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast. I didn't even know what Mame was until quite a while later...) that stops by every once in a while barring gifts. What she does on this cd is one of those gifts. Sondhiem also wrote his greatest score: Worst Pies in London, The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, and A Little Priest. But what really makes this recording incredible is Lansbury herself. She's trully the greatest musical theater actress living today.
