Angela i thought did it best but I do love Bernadette's rendition of Rose's turn.
Bernadette Peters is the best interpreter of Sondheim's lyrics alive!
considering i've only seen Bernedette... I have to be uninformed and say her

I saw Ann Sothern, Angela Lansbury, Dolores Gray, Tyne Daly, Jana Robbins, Linda Lavin, Lainie Kazan, Maureen Moore and Bernadette Peters on stage. On film: Rosalind Russell and Bette Midler.
My two favorites: Ann Sothern and Maureen Moore. Ms. Moore is a brilliantly talented woman - I may have to buy a ticket to see her in GREY GARDENS this Sunday. She never ceases to amaze me.

Ethel Merman: the genius who created the template.
Bernadette Peters: the genius who broke the template.
The rest, no matter how good, are ultimately also-rans.
Absolutely Bernadette. She was phenomenal.
I can only speak for recordings as I've never actually seen a stage production, but my favorite is Angela Landsbury.
Bernadette. The woman is a goddess.

Anyone like Joyce besides me? lol
"Your", love, not "You're" ... unless you want to tell me I'm the favorite Rose

ive only heard cast recordings, so from that i would say my favorites are:
Lansbury (plays Rose like she will gleefully shiv anyone who gets in her way)
Merman (plays Rose like she will accidentally trample anyone who gets in her way)
& LuPone (plays Rose like she uses sex as a weapon)
& i know that if/when i get to see LuPone in GYPSY, she will be the Queen of my world forever & ever, amen!!!

I've only seen Bernadette, Bette, and Patti as Rose, so in my (albeit biased) opinion, my favorite Rose is Patti hands down. I don't know if I saw Bernadette on an off evening, but when I saw her I left completely unimpressed. Patti, on the other hand, sent shivers down my spine. Absolutely incredible!
According to Dolores Grey, the best Rose ever was...
Dolores Gray!
She said, "I was the only one who understood the PSYCHOLOGY!"
Horton, KZ has as of yet only played Rose in the twisted fantasy world of our Garland Grrrl.
ROSALIND RUSSELL!!!
I've never missed a performance in my own mind either.
PJ--Perhaps Dolores was the only one who could SPELL "psychology." But I give her credit for being able to reach her own back and pat it enthusiastically.

Lansbury. She played it smart, sexy, conniving and manipulative, decades before Peters did the same thing not quite as well.
I wish there were some record of Ann Sothern in the role. It does seem to me that she would have been perfect for it, at least dramatically.
Btw, I saw Lansbury twice and at neither performance did she get a standing ovation for "Rose's Turn." Not that the audiences weren't extremely enthusiastic, but that didn't happen the times I saw her, though she certainly did get a standing ovation at the end both times and that was when they were pretty rare.
I have seen all of the Broadway Roses, most of them multiple times, and I list them in the order of their appeal to me:
1)ETHEL MERMAN who sang AND acted the hell out of the role.
2)TYNE DALY whose tremendous stage presence made up for her lack of stellar singing. I could watch her read the telephone book.
3)ANGELA LANSBURY whose performance in London (which I saw) surpassed her Broadway performance(which I also saw), in that on Broadway IMO she overdid the mad scene element of "Rose's Turn", even though she was following director Arthur Laurents's wishes.
4)BERNADETTE PETERS, who was good but not great, IMO.
5)BETTE MIDLER, who was not as good as she should have been, but it's good to have the film since it greatly surpasses the Rosalind Russell film.
6)LINDA LAVIN, who just didn't have the strength or stage presence.
I would love to have seen Dolores Gray in the part.
I never saw an understudy go on so I can't comment on them.I wonder how Mary Louise Wilson would have been, going on for Angela Lansbury.
I look forward to eventually seeing Patti LuPone in the part.
