Sondheim's Follies. I know it has its fans...but why?
What about you?

I'm your hero?
Aw.
With hindsight, perhaps it's not one of my best.

Posted: 9/9/05 at 9:34pmWhy does Follies have fans? Because despite a flawed book, it's perhaps his greatest and most emotional show, with a score that contains crowd-pleasing numbers in the style of composers of the 30's and 40's AND deeply felt character songs that, instead of sounding out of place with the more hummable songs, fit and compliment the other style beautifully. The characters are real and identifiable, its themes of regret and longing for the past have touched many, and to top it all off, it contains some of the wittiest and most stirring lyrics ever penned for the musical stage. That's why.

Posted: 9/9/05 at 9:39pmI knew my choice would be controversial! I'm well aware it's more of a personal feeling - but something's just not quite right. Pehaps it's not Sondheim's fault, though.

Follies is my favorite Sondheim show. My mother used to sing "I'm Still Here" to me.
Never a mistake.
Me, I like to laugh.
Me, I like to love.

My hero? Jonathan Larson. His biggest mistake? Dying.
He had such potential... it makes me sad thinking how much more joy he could bring, and now he won't have that chance.

Somehow, I don't think Jonathan Larson meant to die.
But I know what you mean. It's really sad.

Has Ellen DeGeneres made any mistakes?
hmmmm, she fills me with joy and utter bliss.
It makes me want to cry when I think of how I will never see her show cause I am in the midwest and to poor to make my mom take me to see her.
so sad,

My hero's biggest mistake was being gay, because now I can't marry him.
However from his point of view that's a good thing.
But not from mine.
(D'ya see how I cleverly worded that so the majority of my heroes could be filled in? Yeeeaaaahhh.)

Dude, you are so entitled to you opinion. But if you are going to bash a much loved piece like Follies, please back up your opinion.
Hmmm...I'm trying to think of something I hate from someone I admire. I think part of admiring someone is understanding where they are going creatively.

boytobroadway Smoking, at least short term, helps an singers voice (relaxes those vocal nodes). Of course long term, that is a different story all together. There was a post a while ago about this very issue, search for the term 'smoking' I think it is only at worst on page two in the search.
Of course me personally, I'd say Rasputin in "Anastasia". Why oh why? Brilliant and beautiful movie - except for that one mistake with a stupid stupid stupid idiotic character - 'magic powers' in an otherwise relative realistic movie (than again I suppose it wasn't either Ahrens or Flaherty's doing but a decision made by the highers up in the studio).

Well, off-topic here, when I was about 13, my hero was Hilary Duff. And her biggest mistake was going into singing.
After that, ick.
