"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Having seen the original & seeing him in NINE, it is a great marriage. A great star in an underappreciated show.

So excited! Hope the rest of the cast is just as exciting.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

Is there no one else who they could trust with the choreography? I mean, isn't Trujillo doing enough right now ? And very mediocre ? It seems the pickin's are slim but there has to be someone else who could do justice to this piece. Trujillo is athletic at best ( Memphis) but his work really has no style or signature. Producers just don't want to give untested talent a chance on Broadway. Just go with who's already out there. For my money I would have hired Patti Columbo who's recent work at Papermill ( Seven Brides, etc.) sizzled with style, passion AND athleticism. C'mon, bring in some new blood !

Isn't he still a little too young and hunky for the role?
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

Mr Roxy, in the last revival didn't they change the lyric to that song to "Life is what you do til the moment you die" as the former was considered too much of a downer?

Either lyric is OK as far as I am concerned. I did not see the Quinn revival so only had the original to go by.

The lyric was changed because Quinn wouldn't sing the original, stating that in his not-so-humble-opinion (by that time Quinn thought he had even written the novel) Zorba would NEVER say such a thing. Kander and Ebb didn't really agree, but acquiesced.

Banderas as Zorba strikes me as a strange, but marquee-centric choice. His arched-eyebrow urbanity may be ill-fitted to Zorba's rowdy humanity.

Isn't he about the same age Quinn was when he played it?
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

Bernardi was closer to the character than either Quinn or Banderas but I still think Banderas will be great as he was in NINE playing an Italian. This is why it is called acting

I can only hope that Loretta Swit gets tapped to play Mme Hortense. No other living actress could do the role justice. Besides, it's time to get La Swit back on Broadway where she belongs!

Maria Karnilova blew me away in the original.

I saw "Zorba" with Anthony Quinn and Debbie Shapiro back in the early 80's in LA at The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion before it went to Broadway. It was a great show.

Great news about Antonio coming back to Broadway.

Actually, Liza and Ebersole are both inspired choices. It's a jewel of a role.

The show is one of my favorites, but it's dark, dark, dark, and almost under composed (look at the tunestack -- not a lot of material there).

I'll be there.
