I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts about the way Zach chooses his final eight. He reads some names, has those people step forward, then tells them thanks, but no thanks. The ones who make the chorus are the ones he didn't name. Maybe it's just me, but doesn't this seem rather sadistic, to have those whose names are called think they're the ones picked, only to crush them?

Just adds to the drama! Haha. A characature of the cut-throat world of theatre, just in the way he names his 8!
They do that alot on reality TV shows like Idol and Grease..it sure adds drama.
I would like to think that in calling them forward, they at least get a brief moment of recognition "you were all so good, but we can only choose so many so take a step forward as we recognize that, but unfortunately we can not use you at this time..."
The other way reads "The following people are really great so come on down and be loved, the rest of you can just slink away cause you suck..."

If you take the show literally the entire audition is rather sadistic.
Zach has become attached to them. He's cares. He's nervous about having to tell them who made it and who didn't. And that's true: auditions are by nature sadistic.
It gives each of the actors a chance to express the pleasure they would feel if they were chosen - then the disappointment and surprise. Nice touch, actually.
