AMY ADAMS.... A MAY ZING idea! She is red hot!
me too. So the criticism that "she'd riff all over the NINE score" might be hasty.

Idina could sing the score as written.. it does not stop her form being wrong for the role.
I was told that the reason why CZJ left the movie was because she wanted written in her contract, "Will win another Oscar". Since, they can not make that happen, she said "forget it".
how subjective "wrong for the role" can be...thank goodness. That's why Baskin Robbins has made a marketing mint off "31 Flavors" and Blue Bell can stick to basics.
when they figure out that Oscar-earning clause, that Attorney will be a billionaire!

I am sorry if you don't understand how idina is "wrong for the role" but if you know the show.. she is. Just like Kristin would be wrong for the role.. and so is Audra and Patti and Betty. Casting is not one role fits all. The role calls for more than just the right sex organs.

I think I stated what I thought was right about Idina before. I agree that casting is more than the right organs. I also maintain that the read on the role is subjective. It's true that I confused the character names, but I've seen the show enough times in enough castings to find some of Idina's qualities appropriate. Why is that so hard to accept?
Okay, let's see the more high profile roles Idina Menzel has done in her career: Maureen in RENT (Broadway, film), Amneris in AIDA, Elphaba in WICKED, Female Leading role in SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE, Nancy in ENCHANTED, Vera in ASK THE DUST.
Now, mention one of those shows where she portrayed someone with an ethereal quality, someone that Guido Contini--the ultimate casanova--would NEED to be able to complete his script, someone that Guido would run to and neglect his wife (played by the sexy, gorgeous, and elegant Marion Cotillard) for, a muse that has inspired great film-making. These are the qualities Claudia possesses and you need an actress that is able to pull all of them off and then some, particularly an actress who does a good job with subtlety (giving a nuanced, delicate yet scene-stealing performance), and an actress who commands the camera regardless of who else is standing next to her.
Idina Menzel is not a subtle, nuanced actress, that's one of the reasons her Maureen can't be matched, she is just broad, big, and loves chewing the scenery. Unlike Sherie Rene Scott (an actress whom she has been compared with dozen of times), she is unable to go from that broad style to the more quiet performance style. Also, Menzel does not photograph well on screen, did you see ENCHANTED???
Amy Adams is too American Pie for NINE. Emily Blunt is too young for Claudia. Cruz is perfect for the role, now find someone like Salma Hayek or Toni Collette for Carla and I'll be a happy homo.
I agree Idina is more suited to Wife than Muse. Shelly Burch, the original Claudia, also belted "Star to Be" in ANNIE, and that's not particularly ethereal. Otherwise, there is some subjectivity on the role's range. Idina was pretty subtle in ENCHANTED, but I concede that's my take and not a universal truth.
How about Carice van Houten?
Damn. I wanted to do it.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench are in talks to join the movie. Perhaps Nicole would take over the role of Claudia?

I think Kidman would make a fine Luisa, but not sure I would buy her as Claudia. Honestly, I wonder if this film is meant to happen at all, it seems like it's plagued with all kinds of trouble.

Poor Penelope Cruz. She'll be the only one without "Academy Award Winner" before her name.

CZJ should save herself for that GYPSY remake. In my dreams, I know.
I think Kidman will be a beautiful Claudia (I can see her singing "Unusual Way" better than any other song in the show). She might be a little old, but besides for that I'm happy.
Who would Judi Dench play? LaFleur?
I'm thinking La Fleur. I would have liked to have seen a french woman in the role (Deneuve, Huppert) but I guess they are going for names to seel tickets.

Wouldn't Judi Dench play Guido's mother? Or has that already been cast?
God, will they make them all use Italian accents like in that ridiculous revival?
Sophia Loren is already cast as Guido's Mother.
I can take or leave Nicole Kidman in this film, but personally, I would LOVE to see Judi Dench as La Fleur.
Sophia Loren has apparently been locked in as Guido's mother. i know- Cotillard, Bardem,Cruz,Kidman and Dench all doing Italian accents sounds too much to swallow.
Although Dench would be doing French, we assume.

That's right, I'd forgotten about Sophia Loren.
Whatever. I'm not going to see it anyway.
I'm thinking they should kick Rob Marshall off directing it, bring in John Waters, cast Johnny Knoxville, Tracey Ullman and Mink Stole as Lilliane La Fleur, and then you'd have something worth watching.

They could hire a blindfolded babboon to direct it instead of Rob Marshall. Cheaper, and you'd get the same results.
