Paltrow, Hudson, Portman, etc. are all completely wrong for Claudia.
I think it will happen. I'm staying hopeful.
But I'm still worried with what they might do to the score. Marshall had no problem cutting about 30% of Chicago's score, granted most cuts were justified (except 'My Own Best Friend' and 'Me and My Baby', in my opinion).
Too bad.
The story I heard re Chicago was Zeta Jones asked for Velma and was told by Marshall "But Roxie's the star" and she responded "yes but Velma sings "All That Jazz"." She knew what she wanted and got the role, the song and an Oscar. Not so bad a choice.
Let Amy Adams (the commedienne) play Carla and make Cruz (the siren) play Claudia.
Yes, please. It would be so great to see Amy's "A Call from the Vatican." Although realistically, I think you'd have the same problem with her sticking out in a cast of Italian-looking women.
Fine by me. I always thought she would make a much better Luisa, anyway.
Idina (and not just because of RENT) would make a fine Claudia (if a little young), with a great take on the song, and who can ACT. She even has a following of sorts; the true cinephiles will show up for Marshall's direction, Bardeem, and the Fellini connection anyway. A younger demo (from WICKED, RENT, and her new CD) might show up for Idina.
You're kidding us, right?
nope, having seen Idina in SEE WANT YOU WANT TO SEE (or whatever it was called) at the Public (as well as Mary Stuart Masterson in the revival, another "slightly different" castin choice for Claudia), I think it's a good fit. I do think Idina can act and that her voice fits that song. She has the kind of strength that suits Claudia really well, when most of the women in the show are pushovers for the central male. He has to respect her, and I think she could bring that to it.
Idina would wind up riffing ALL over 'Unusual Way.' Which would be a disaster.
there was not a single riff from her in SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE. Try the cast recording.

Amy Adams is a great idea!

- Have it. And I hear lots of screaming.
mmousefan-Are you sure you're not talking about Luisa? THAT'S who Mary Stuart Masterson played.
I still say make Cruz Claudia and Emily Blunt as Carla. Anyone see her on the cover of Vanity Fair? THAT'S sex appeal.
wickedfan: I just bought the magazine, it's so true
And yes, Idina riffs quite a bit on the SWIWS album. Can anyone agree that "No More" was quite a riff-fest?

Idina reads way to hard on screen.
Natalie Portman was the secod standby for Laura Bell Bundy in RUTHLESS (the first standby was Britney Spears)
I thought Zeta Jones would be a MUCH more interesting Lillian LeFleur in NINE. Some heat and sexual tension in that role!
I may indeed have the NINE role names confused. I thought Zeta-Jones was slated for the wife role that sings "Most Unusual Way."
When I saw SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE live there was no riffing. The screaming you may be talking about is scored, not invented.
That screaming was not scored, Audra McDonald did not sing the role that way.
Also, the Wife role does not sing 'Unusual Way.' Luisa is his wife she gets two killer numbers, 'My Husband Makes Movies' & 'Be On Your Own.' Claudia is Guido's muse, and she sings 'Unusual Way.'

Claudia the muse sings VERY UNUSAUAL WAY
Louisa the wife sings BE ON YOUR OWN & MY HUSBAND MAKES MOVIES
I'd love to hear Audra sing some of that, where is it recorded?
I do have the right definition of "riff" in that the melismas are free-form and not part of the composition? Has Audra recorded or sung the material in context of the show as it was scored for the Public?
Sorry for the confusion between Muse/Wife. I do think Idina might be suited for Muse, but maybe even for the wife. I think BE ON YOUR OWN is as great an emotional piece as UNUSUAL WAY.
From playbill.com
"a 2004 production at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, the project was known as R Shomon and featured Audra McDonald."
You can hear her sing SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE here

Incredibly different from Idina's version.
Anyone esle REALLY excited about Marion Cotillard in the film? She is my new red carpet obsession!
My vote is Amy Adams or Emily Blunt as Claudia.
I'm sure it is different, thanks for the link. They are different singers, and my bet is that as professionals they sang the score the way the composer/arranger wanted it in the context. The same might be assumed for the score of NINE as a movie musical. I just don't think Idina riffs because she feels like it, unless it's on her own song or recording, not as part of a characterization.

ahh man. That would have been awesome.
All I know is riffs are not usually written into a score. And composers absolutely have the right to allow or not allow their performers to riff. A similar example would be CHICAGO on Broadway in the late 90's. Roxie and Velma (on Broadway and in London) started singing a harmony not written in the score for 'My Own Best Friend.' When Kander & Ebb re-visted the show, they immediately had the harmony taken out because it's not what was written. So a composer has a right to stop a performer from straying from the melody of one of their songs. In the case of Idina, I assume LaChiusa was fine with her riffs/screaming.
